    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a soap having excellent odor using palm oil as a raw material by hydrogenating palm oil in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst under specific conditions and then saponifying the resultant hydrogenated palm oil with an alkali metal hydroxide, etc. CONSTITUTION:(A) A hydrogenated palm oil prepared by hydrogenating palm oil in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst until the linoleic acid content in fatty acids obtained on the assumption that the hydrogenated palm oil is completely hydrolyzed attains a value reduced by 10wt.% or more based on the content before the hydrogenation, or fats and oils containing the hydrogenated palm oil are saponified with (B) a compound selected from alkali metal hydroxides and alkali metal (bi)carbonates to afford the objective product. The hydrogenation is preferably carried out at ordinary temperature to 230 deg.C under a hydrogen pressure of ordinary pressure to 20kg/cm G (G is gauge pressure) by using the hydrogenating catalyst containing a platinum group metal such as Ni, Cu or Pt as a metal species.

    Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:An N-acyl-N-(2-hydroxypropyl)glycine shown by formula I (n is 8-16) and a salt thereof. EXAMPLE:N-Lauroyl-N-(2-hydroxypropyl)glycine. USE:Useful as a surface active agent having surface active ability of improved hard water resistance and improved low irritation and also useful as a detergent for hair and skin for infants and children, as a kitchen detergent for housewives likely to have chapped hands, daily shampoo for people washing hair every day, etc. Preferably usable as low-irritation shampoo for hairdressing and beauty culture. PREPARATION:A fatty acid chloride shown by formula II is reacted with an N-(2-hydroxypropyl)glycine shown by formula III in the presence of a base to give a compound shown by formula I. The compound shown by formula II, for example, is obtained by synthesis from a corresponding fatty acid and phosphorus trichloride and the compound shown by formula III is obtained from monoisopropanolamine and sodium monochloroacetate.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the rate of reaction and to make an apparatus compact in size in the continuous production of soap by the ester saponification method by carrying out the reaction in a complete mixing reactor beforehand and then in a plug flow reactor. CONSTITUTION:Saponification is carried out by use of a continuous reaction apparatus which consists of a combination of the 1st reaction section and the 2nd reaction section in the continuous method for preparing soap by the saponification of fatty acid/lower alcohol esters. The 1st reaction section consists of at least one complete mixing reactor, and the 2nd reaction section consists of at least one plug flow reactor. Saponification should preferably be carried out in the complete mixing reactor until the rate of saponification reaches 20-80%, and then in the plug flow reactor. An apparatus for practicing the method comprises arranging raw material storage tanks 3 and 4 for fatty acid/ lower alcohol esters and alkali agents each, the complete mixing reactor 1, the plug flow reactor 2 and a saponificate extracting port 7 in the order and connecting them in series.
