    Abstract: A synthetic lubricating oil containing a cyclic ketal or acetal prepared from at least one polyhydric alcohol selected from among tetra-, hexa-, octa- and decahydric alcohols and at least one member selected from among specified carbonyl compounds and ketals and acetals as reactive derivatives thereof; a refrigerator working fluid composition comprising a hydrofluorocarbon and a refrigerator oil containing the cyclic ketal or acetal; novel compounds among the cyclic acetals; and process for producing the same. The invention can provide an inexpensive synthetic lubricating oil which is excellent in heat and oxidation resistances, does not yield carboxylic acids upon hydrolysis, and is lowly hygroscopic. The invention provides also an inexpensive refrigerator working fluid composition which is excellent in electrical insulation and hygroscopicity and does not yield carboxylic acids upon hydrolysis.

The compound is obtained by reacting a hexavalent alcohol of formula III (preferably sorbitol) with a carbonyl compound of formula IV or its derivative in the presence of an acid catalyst, and subsequently hydrogenating the obtained cyclic acetal compound, or further capping the product with alkyl groups.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a new glyceryl ether compound useful as an oily stain- dissolving agent, a water-soluble organic solvent, a polar oil, an emulsifier, a lubricant, a humectant, etc., or as an intermediate for producing surfactants. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R , R are 2-21C alkyl), e.g. 3-(1- pentylhexyloxy)-1,2-propanediol. A compound of formula II (R is H, 1-21C alkyl, or forms a 2-21C alkylene together with R ; R is 1-21C alkyl; but cases where both R and R are alkyl not having H at the alpha-position are excluded) including the compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III with glycerol in the presence of an acid catalyst and subsequently hydrogenating the produced acetal or ketal in the presence of a palladium catalyst. Since the alkyl part of the compound is branched at the alpha-position of the carbon chain, most of the compounds have low melting points in spite of their large mol.wts., and are liquid at room temperature, and good in physical properties.
