    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium capable of reducing surface electrical resistance while durability is maintained. SOLUTION: This medium comprises a first magnetic layer 3a which is provided as the uppermost layer and a second magnetic layer 3b which is provided adjacently to the first magnetic layer 3a and which contains a ferromagnetic powder, binder and carbon powder. In this case, the medium is such that the second magnetic layer contains 30-70 pts.wt. binder to 100 pts.wt. ferromagnetic powder; that the binder is constituted, to the 100 pts.wt. ferromagnetic powder, of 10-40 pts.wt. polyurethane binder whose glass transition point (Tg) is 50 deg.C or above; that the carbon powder, with the average grain size of the primary particle of not less than 10 nm but less that 30 nm, comprises 10-40 pts.wt. against the 100 pts.wt. ferromagnetic powder; and that the surface electrical resistance of the magnetic layer, when the medium is worked into the shape of a tape, is in the range of 10 to 10 Ω/square.
