    Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily measure the transparency of a sample such as human skin with high accuracy by projecting the periphery of the sample, and measuring internally scattered light which is scattered by the transparent layer of the sample. CONSTITUTION:While the sample opening part 5 of a light shielding body 1 is open, namely, while a cover plate 4 is detached, the lower end part of the light shielding body 1 is made to about on the sample, a position where transparency is to be measured is positioned in the opening part 5, and the sample is irradiated with light from a light source part 2. Then reflected light from the sample is received by a light receiving part 3 and received by a photometric device connected to the light receiving part 3 to measure the spectral reflection factor R1 of the reflected light. Then the cover plate 4 is mounted on the opening part 5 of the light shielding body 1 and the sample positioned at the small opening part 6 of the cover plate 6 is irradiated with light from the light source part 2 and similar operation is performed to measure the reflected light from the sample positioned in the opening part 6, and the spectral reflection factor R2 of the reflected light. Then the transparency of the sample such as human skin is easily measured with high accuracy from the measured values of the spectral reflection factors R1 and R2.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a cosmetic, containing spherical barium sulfate, capable of imparting good transparency and a feeling of bare skin, making dermal stains, ephelides, etc., inconspicuous and preventing the white floating. CONSTITUTION: This cosmetic contains spherical barium sulfate having 100-120 sphericity defined by (circular area corresponding to the maximum particle diameter in a particle projected image/particle projected area)×100 and 0.1-4μm volume-average particle diameter in an amount of preferably 0.1-99wt.%, preferably 1-95wt.% in the cosmetic ingredient. The water repellent treatment of the spherical barium sulfate is preferably carried out by using a usually used water repellent treating agent (e.g., a silicone oil). The amount of the water repellent treating agent based on the spherical barium sulfate powder is 0.05-20wt.% and sufficient water repellency and good touch are obtained. The spherical barium sulfate powder is obtained by reacting, e.g., a water-soluble barium salt with a water-soluble sulfate in the presence of barium ions and a complex-forming agent.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a nontacky oily solid cosmetic, good in extensibility and adhesion onto the skin, stable with time without causing liquid sagging and oil floating which have hitherto been problems in blending a silicone oil therein. CONSTITUTION: This oily solid cosmetic contains (A) 0.1-10wt.% phosphoric diester polyvalent metallic salt-modified organo(poly)siloxane in which two Si atoms in the organo(poly)siloxane or one Si atom each in two molecules of the organo(poly)siloxane is bound to direct bonds X and X' in a compound of formula I [R is a 2-20C alkylene; R is a 1-20C alkylene which can be substituted with OH; M is an alkaline earth metal or a bi- or a polyvalent transition metal; (n) is the valence of M; (p) is 0-200; X and X' are the direct bonds], (B) 0.1-30wt.% cosmetic oil which is a liquid or a semisolid at ambient temperature, (C) 1-90wt.% silicone oil that is a liquid at ambient temperature and (D) 5-90wt.% water repellent-treated pigment. A compound of formula II [R to R are each a 1-22C alkyl, a 1-20C alkoxy or phenyl; (q) to (v) are each 0-1000] is preferred as the ingredient (A).

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance the water and oil repellency of BaSO4 powder by subjecting the powder to surface treatment with a fluorine compd. CONSTITUTION:A barium salt soln. having 0.001-0.05mol/l concn. is mixed with a sulfate or sulfuric acid soln. having 0.001-0.05 mol/1 concn. in (1:10)-(5:1) molar ratio so that pH 1.0-5.0 is attained and the resulting mixture is brought into a reaction at 5-100 deg.C to obtain BaSO4 powder having 5-100 ratio of the average diameter of the platy faces to the thickness and 20-150 ratio of the square of the peripheral length of the platy faces to the total area of the platy faces. The objective fluorine-treated BaSO4 powder is obtd. by subjecting 100 pts.wt. of the resulting BaSO4 powder to surface treatment with 0.05-20 pts.wt. fluorine compd. and cosmetics are blended with 0.1-99.9wt.% of the fluorine-treated BaSO4 powder.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To measure the transparency of a sample such as human skin, whose transmittance cannot be measured as a matter of fact, highly accurately, by constituting an apparatus with a light source part, a light receiving part, a light screening part, a cover plate and a light measuring device, and transmitting the light. CONSTITUTION:The basic structure of a measuring apparatus is composed of the following parts: a cylindrical light screening body 1; a light source part 2, which is provided at the upper part of a light screening body 2; a light receiving part 3; a circular cover plate 4, which is provided at an opening part at the lower end of the light screening body 1; and a light measuring device, which is linked to the light receiving part 3. Light is projected on a sample from the light source part 2 and reflected from the sample at a position (the position of a small opening part 6 when the cover plate 4 is attached) corresponding to the light receiving part 3. The light receiving part 3 receives the reflected light. The reflected light, which is received with the light receiving part 3, is measured with the light measuring device, which is linked to the light receiving part 3. Thus the reflectivity of the reflected light from the sample is measured.
