Abstract: PURPOSE:To use a highly active catalyst effectively and to hydrogenate coal efficiently, by hydrogenating coal slurry in the presence of a powdery catalyst while adsorbing catalyst poison components on the powdery catalyst, separating the powdery catalyst form the coal slurry, followed by hydrogenating the coal in the presence of a granular catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Coal slurry (e.g., a mixture of powdery coal and residual oil, etc.) is blended with preferably 1-10wt% powdery catalyst (e.g., powder of iron ore, etc.) having particle diameters preferably 1-100mu, and the first hydrogenation treatment is carried out preferably at 350-500 deg.C under 100-200kg/cm G while catalyst poison components (e.g., sulfur, Na, etc.) contained in the coal slurry being adsorbed on the powdery catalyst. Preferably 50-80wt% powdery catalyst is separated and removed by a solid-liquid separator, and the second hydrogenation treatment is done in the presence of a granular catalyst (e.g., Ni, etc. supported by alumina, etc., preferably having average pore diameters 20-200Angstrom ) having particle diameters 0.8-5mm..

Abstract: PURPOSE:To carry out efficiently hydrogenation treatment by prolonging catalyst life, by a method wherein a powdered solid catalyst is mixed with liquefied material of coal, the mixt. is subjected to the first hydrogenation treatment, and then the second hydrogenation treatment is carried out in the presence of a particulate solid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Liquefied material of coal is mixed with a powdered solid catalyst having a particle diameter of not more than 3mm in a mixer 4 to obtain a mixt. which is then mixed with H2 supplied from a line 9. The resulting mixt. is introduced into the first hydrogenating reactor 1 where the first hydrogenation treatment is carried out to decompose S, N, and O components present in the liquefied material of coal and to adsorb metals present in the liquefied material of coal on the powdered solid catalyst, said metals being catalyst poison. Then products are introduced into the second hydrogenating reactor 2 where the second hydrogenation treatment is carried out in the presence of a particulate solid catalyst having a particle diameter of not less than 0.5mm. The resulting products are introduced into a gas separator 3. Gas in the products is separated through a line 13. Produced oil contg. the catalyst powder is introduced into a solid-liquid separator 5. The produced oil is recovered through a line 15. The catalyst powder is recovered through a line 16.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To carry out hydrogenation treatment of coal wherein highly active, expensive catalyst is used in high efficiency, by removing catalytically poisonous components by adsorbing in powdery catalyst, in the first stage of the hydrogenation treatment of coal, and then hydrogenating the above treated coal by the use of a granular catalyst in the second stage. CONSTITUTION:In the hydrogenation treatment of coal, an inexpensive powdery solid catalyst is mixed with coal, and then, the primary hydrogenation treatment is carried out, while, at the same time, catalytically poisonous components contained in the coal is removed by adsorption in the powdery catalyst. Then, the primary hydrogenation product is subjected to secondary hydrogenation treatment in the presence of a granular solid catalyst without removal of the powdery catalyst from the primary hydrogenation catalyst. The powdery solid catalyst is removed from the secondary hydrogenation product and then, the product oil is recovered. As the powdery solid catalyst used in the primary hydrogenation treatment, an inexpensive hydrogenation catalyst having demetallizing activity, such as Ni, or Co, supported on tuff loam, loess, silica, alumina, etc., is used.

Then products are introduced into the second hydrogenating reactor 2 where the second hydrogenation treatment is carried out in the presence of a particulate solid catalyst having an average pore diameter of 50-200Angstrom and a particle diameter of not less than 0.5mm. The resulting products is introduced into a gas separator 3. Gas in the products is separated through a line 13. Produced oil contg. the catalyst powder is introduced into a solid-liquid separator 5. The produced oil is recovered through a line 15. The catalyst powder is recovered through a line 16.
