Abstract: The escalator extends between upper and lower traffic areas (11,12) along a conveying path and is made up of panels (6) pivotally mounted between side plates. The panels remain horizontal independently of the position of the side plates (15). The panels are mounted on pivot shafts. The tread panels are surrounded by extendable accordion pleated walls. The accordion pleated walls can have multiple U-shaped sheets to allow coverage of the side gaps of the tread panels.
