Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a remote monitor system and a remote monitor method that utilize an ADSL MODEM in a reverse direction and compress and transmit video data or video and audio data so as to remotely monitor the transmission state in real time. SOLUTION: The remote monitor system is provided with a monitor camera 32 or the like that outputs monitor data in an ATM 31, a remote monitor image data processing unit 34 that monitors operations of each channel to generate a sensing signal so that the monitor data are compression-coded onto a bit stream and the resulting stream is transmitted, a 1st ADSL modem 36 that is set in the reverse direction so that the modem 36 modulates an output of the processing section 24 to be sent in an incoming direction at a transmission rate faster than that of data in an outgoing direction and demodulates data modulated and transmitted from a central station 38 to be sent to the remote monitor image data processing unit 34, and a 2nd ADSL modem 37 that is set in a reverse direction so that the modem 37 demodulates the data modulated and sent from the modem 36 to be sent to the central station 38 and modulates the data sent from the central station 38 to the 1st ADSL modem 36 at a transmission rate slower than that of the data in the incoming direction.
