Abstract: PURPOSE:An aqueous dispersion having a high effective concentration, excellent dispersion stability and sizing effect, and especially good rise in sizing, containing a water-insoluble substance, a cationic surface active agent, and a specified reaction product of vinyl monomers. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous dispersion containing a water-insoluble substance ( I ) (e.g. preferably ketene dimer), and a reaction product (II) of 1-15mol% cationic surface active agent containing a hydrocarbon group of 4-28C and polymerizable functional groups [e.g. a compound of formula I or II (where R1 is H, etc.; R2 and R3 each are a lower alkyl of 1-3C; R4 is a hydrocarbon group of 4- 28C; Y is O, etc.; Z and Z' are each an alkylene of 1-4C, etc.; X is a halogen, etc.)], 10-50mol% aromatic vinyl monomer, 10-50mol% cationic vinyl monomer, and 10-50mol% water-soluble nonionic vinyl monomer.

CONSTITUTION:1-15mol% of a hydrophobic vinyl monomer having a 10-28C hydrocarbon group such as alkyl acrylate, 10-50mol% of an aromatic vinyl monomer such as styrene or a styrene derivative, 10-50mol% of a cationic vinyl monomer such as beta-acryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium salt and 10- 50mol% of a water-soluble nonionic vinyl monomer such as acrylamide are polymerized in the presence of a radical initiator to obtain a water-soluble polymer which is, in turn, added to an aqueous dispersion containing a water-insoluble substance such as a ketene dimer, org. pigment of inorg. pigment.
