    Abstract: A privacy-mode backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light having a predetermined collimation factor orthogonal to a length of the light guide and a plurality of scattering line elements arranged along the light guide length. Scattering line elements of the scattering line element plurality are configured to scatter out through an emission surface of the light guide a portion of the guided light as emitted light having an illumination beamwidth in the orthogonal direction determined by the collimation factor. The privacy-mode backlight further includes a directional optical diffuser configured to provide directional diffusion of the emitted light in a direction corresponding to the light guide length. The directional diffusion may provide uniform illumination in the light guide length direction. A privacy display further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the emitted light to provide a private image.

    Abstract: A multiview backlight and a multiview display employ multibeam elements configured to provide a tilted plurality of light beams having different principal angular directions corresponding to different view directions of a plurality of views of the multiview display. Further, the tilted plurality of light beams has a tilt toward a center of a view zone of the multiview display to provide converging views. The multiview backlight includes a light guide and an array of the multibeam elements. The multiview display further includes multiview pixels that include view pixels to modulate the tilted plurality of light beams having the tilt and the different principal angular directions.

    Abstract: Examples disclosed herein include a plate light guide configured to guide light along a length of a light guide. The light guided along the length of the light guide propagates in at least two directional modes: a first directional mode and a second directional mode. Light guided in a first directional mode has one or both of a transverse component that is greater than and a vertical component that is less than respective transverse and vertical components of light guided in the second directional mode. Also included is a global mode mixer. The global mode mixer extends along the length of the light guide length and is configured to convert a portion of the light guided in a first directional mode into a second directional mode. A scattering element preferentially scatters light in the second directional mode out of the light guide.

    Abstract: Color-scanning grating-based backlighting includes a color scanning protocol to provide different colors of light in different regions of a plate light guide with an intervening dark region. A color-scanning grating-based backlight includes the plate light guide and a diffraction grating configured to diffractively couple out a portion of a guided light beam as a coupled-out light beam directed away from a plate light guide surface at a predetermined principal angular direction.
