Abstract: A multibeam backlight and multiview display employ a multibeam element having a shaped edge with a shape configured to disperse spurious diffraction components. The multibeam backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light and a plurality of multibeam elements spaced apart from one another across the light guide, the multibeam element plurality being configured to scatter out the guided light as emitted light. A multibeam element of the multibeam element plurality includes a shaped edge oriented orthogonal to the propagation direction and having shape of the shaped edge of the multibeam element is configured to disperse spurious diffraction components in the emitted light associated with an interaction between the guided light and the multibeam element. The multiview display includes a light valve array configured to modulate the emitted light as a multiview image having a plurality of views in a similar plurality of different view directions.

Abstract: A static multiview display and method of static multiview display operation provide a static multiview image using diffractive gratings to diffractively scatter light from guided light beams having different radial directions. The static multiview display includes a light guide configured to guide plurality of guided light beams and a light source configured to provide the guided light beam plurality having the different radial directions. The static multiview display further includes a plurality of diffraction gratings configured to provide from a portion of the guided light beams directional light beams having intensities and principal angular directions corresponding to view pixels of the static multiview image. The static multiview image has an arrangement of views configured to provide diagonal parallax that may facilitate viewing from a diagonal direction relative to the static multiview display.

Abstract: A horizontal parallax multiview display employs a plurality of slanted multibeam columns to scatter out of a light guide a plurality of directional light beams having principal angular directions corresponding to different view directions of the horizontal parallax multiview display. The plurality of directional light beams is modulated using an array of light valves to provide a multiview image having horizontal parallax. Further, the horizontal parallax multiview display employs a light control film having a slanted light control axis aligned with slanted multibeam columns of the slanted multibeam column plurality. The light control film is configured to control a view angle of the multiview image in a direction orthogonal to the horizontal parallax. The slanted multibeam columns may provide the multiview displays with a balanced resolution.

Abstract: A cross-render multiview camera provides a multiview image of a scene using a synthesized image generated from a disparity map of the scene. The cross-render multiview camera includes a plurality of cameras along a first axis and configured to capture a plurality of images of the scene. The cross-render multiview camera further includes an image synthesizer configured to generate the synthesized image from the disparity map determined from the image plurality, the synthesized image representing a view of the scene from a perspective corresponding to a location of a virtual camera on a second axis displaced from the first axis. A cross-render multiview system further includes a multiview display configured to display the multiview image. A method of cross-render multiview imaging includes capturing of the plurality of images of the scene and generating the synthesized image using the disparity map.

Abstract: A mode-selectable backlight and privacy display employ directional scattering features to provide emitted light. The mode-selectable backlight includes a light guide, a first directional scattering feature to provide broad-angle emitted light from guided light having a first propagation direction within the light guide during a public mode, and a second directional scattering feature to provide second light from guided light having a second propagation direction within the light guide during a privacy mode. The directional emitted light the provided during the privacy mode is directed into a viewbox. The mode-selectable privacy display further includes light sources configured to provide the guided light having the first and second propagation directions along with an array of light valves configured to modulate the broad-angle emitted light as a public image and the directional emitted light as a private image visible within the viewbox.

The multiview backlight includes a light guide and the microstructured multibeam element adjacent and external to a surface of the light guide. The microstructured multibeam element has an input aperture configured to receive a portion of guided light from the light guide and an output aperture configured to emit the plurality of directional light beams. The microstructured multibeam element comprises a microstructure having an interior surface configured to reflect the received guided light portion to provide the plurality of directional light beams at the output aperture. The multiview display includes the multiview backlight and an array of multiview pixels configured to provide different views of the multiview display.
