A backlight unit is provided to improve the entire brightness, by realizing a hybrid typed backlight where external electrode fluorescent lamps and LED(Light Emitting Diode) lamps are mixed. A plurality of first fluorescent lamps(32a) are arranged above a cover bottom, wherein each of the first fluorescent lamps has external electrodes(33a,33b). A plurality of second fluorescent lamps(32b) are arranged between the first fluorescent lamps, wherein each of the second fluorescent lamps has external electrodes(34a.34b). The external electrodes of the second fluorescent lamp are longer than the external electrodes of the first fluorescent lamp. At least one LED lamp(35) is disposed below the first fluorescent lamps.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display in which constant electric power is supplied to a lamp without depending on the scanning duty of the lamp so as to obtain desired brightness, and decrease in reliability of the lamp due to deterioration of the lamp can be prevented by suppressing the current supplied to the lamp not to exceed a set upper limit. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes a lamp 110 for emitting light, a timing controller 102 for generating a lamp control signal to control a light-on time of the lamp 110, and an inverter 108 for controlling light-on and light-off of the lamp 110 according to the lamp control signal while maintaining the electric power constant supplied to the lamp 110 regardless of the light-on time for the lamp 110 and regulating the current in the lamp 110 not to exceed the set value. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for driving a lamp of a liquid crystal display device that can apply a scanning backlight driving method thereto, in a liquid crystal display device using an external electrode fluorescent lamp. This invention relates to an apparatus and method for driving a lamp of a liquid crystal display device that is adaptive for applying a scanning backlight driving to an external electrode fluorescent lamp. A lamp driving apparatus of a liquid crystal display device according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a plurality of lamps (31) which irradiate light to a liquid crystal display panel (42) and include external electrodes (32) ; a common electrode (33) connected to the external electrodes (32) for supplying a tube current to the lamps (31); auxiliary electrodes (35) which are movable; and an auxiliary electrode driving part (37) which sequentially combines the auxiliary electrodes (35) with and separates the auxiliary electrode from the external electrodes (32) in accordance with a scan direction of data that are displayed in the liquid crystal display panel (42).
