Abstract: An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to improve the viewing angle, suppress the contamination due to external particles, and stably maintain the cell gap between upper and lower substrates, by forming a compensation layer within at least one of the substrates. A black matrix(110) is formed in a non-transmissive region of a first substrate(100). A color filter(120) is formed on a transmissive region of the first substrate and the black matrix. A compensation pattern(130) has an exposure region for exposing a portion of the color filter. A column spacer(140) is formed in the exposure region of the compensation pattern. The compensation pattern functions as an overcoat layer for removing the step difference between the color filter and the black matrix.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes a plurality of gate bus lines 1 arranged in a first direction, and a plurality of data bus lines 3 arranged in a second direction on the first substrate, to define a pixel region. A common electrode is formed on the second substrate and a pixel electrode 13 is electrically charged through the data bus line 3 to drive the liquid crystal layer with the common electrode. An auxiliary electrode 15 is formed on a same layer whereon the pixel electrode 13 is formed. A passivation is formed below the pixel electrode 13 and auxiliary electrode 15 to insulate them from other electrodes and bus lines. An alignment layer maybe on at least one substrate, and may comprise a plurality of different alignment domains. In a preferred embodiment, the auxiliary electrode 15 is only formed along one edge of the pixel electrode (Fig 8A).

Abstract: The multi-domain liquid-crystal display device containing an array of pixels, comprises two substrates, first and second (31,33) mounted opposite, a layer of liquid crystal formed between the two substrates, a gate line (1) and a data line formed on the first substrate, the pixel electrode (13) having at least one window (51) for the induction of electric field on the first substrate, an auxiliary common electrode (15) formed on the first substrate in the same layer as the gate line and surrounding the region of pixel, and at least one dielectric structure (53) formed on the common electrode (17) to distort the electric field applied to the liquid-crystal layer for the stability of display and the multi-domain effect. The device also comprises a layer (25) for blocking light, a layer of colour filter (23) formed on the blocking layer (25), a layer for the gate insulation (35) formed by the chemical vapour deposition of silicon nitride or silicon dioxide, a passivation layer (37) formed of a material as benzocyclobutene (BCB), acrylic resin, or polyimide compound, and the phase-difference films (29). In two variants of each of four embodiments, the dielectric structure (53) extends from the common electrode (17) to the pixel electrode (13), and sets the spacing between two opposite substrates (31,33), stabilizing the screen in the regions of pixels. The region of pixel is divided in at least two parts to form a multi-domain pixel, and at least two parts have different characteristics of control. In the third and fourth embodiments, the device comprises a second auxiliary common electrode adjacent to the window for electric field induction. The window (51) comprises a slit. The auxiliary common electrode at least partially overlaps the pixel electrode. The device can also contain an alignment film on at least one of the substrates. The second auxiliary common electrode is in a position to partially overlap the window for electric field induction. In the second and fourth embodiments, the auxiliary common electrode overlaps the pixel electrode forming the storage capacitances.
