Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the magnification of an optical fiber rotating sensor by arranging a depolarizer within an optical path between an optical coupler and an integrated optical chip, and depolarizing a light signal to prevent the change of polarized state in the propagation to an interferometer. SOLUTION: A multiple optical coupler (MUX) 34 imparts an output to an optical fiber 35. The optical fiber 35 guides the optical output from a Lyot depolarizer 36 to a multifunctional integrated optical chip 37. The integrated optical chip 37 comprises waveguides 38-40 forming a Y-coupler 42. The light inputted to a detecting coil 48 through a pigtail 33 forms a clockwise light wave within the detecting coil 48. The light inputted from the pigtail 46 to the detecting coil 48 forms a counterclockwise light wave. The clockwise and counterclockwise light waves form an interference pattern within the detecting coil 48. A magnification error is caused by the change of polarized state of light and the succeeding polarization by the filter action in the integrated optical chip 37. By inserting the depolarizer 25, the polarized state of light is stabilized, and the magnification error is eliminated.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To steadily operate an optical fiber gyro under various environmental conditions by mounting a pair of leads consisting of optical fibers on a detection coil by a specified method using an adhesive having a low elastic coefficient. SOLUTION: Leads 100a, 100b consisting of a pair of optical fibers different in length are arranged on the circumference 108 of a detection coil 102 so as to extend in different directions, and the long lead 100a is bent after extended along the circumference 108 and extended in the same direction as the short lead 100b. An adhesive material having a low elastic coefficient, for example, less than about 500 psi, is applied and hardened by UV irradiation to initially adhere the leads 100a, 100b to the coil 102, and the leads are wound adjacently around the circumference 108 in the same circumferential direction. Thereafter, the same adhesive material is applied to the whole outer surface 118 of the wound leads and hardened. The stress can be dispersed by the use of the adhesive material having low elastic coefficient, and the removal of the leads is also facilitated.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fiber laser of superfluorescent wideband by a method, wherein an optical output of an edge-emission type light-emitting diode is amplified by an optical fiber amplifier and used as a light source for a fiber gyro. SOLUTION: An electric source 11 serving as a power supply supplies power to an optical amplifier 12 and a current source 13. The current source 13 sends a drive current or a bias current to the input port 20 of the light amplifier 12 from a wideband light source such as an emission-type light-emitting diode 15, so as to control the intensity of output light signals. The emission-type light-emitting diode 15 is actuated by a bias current of 50 to 80 Ma to generate an average power of 30 to 60 Uw in terms of power spectrum density, having a smooth wideband distribution. The optical amplifier 12 which is used to amplify output light signals 14 is used in combination to enable its output port 18 to output sufficient power. The gain of an optical amplifier is nearly flat on a problematic bandwidth, and a light signal 16 which is power-boosted can be outputted from the output port 18.

Abstract: A fiber optic rotation sensor system having improved scale factor stability includes an optically pumped gain fiber arranged to provide optical signals to an integrated optics chip connected to a fiber optic sensing coil. An optical coupler receives optical signals from the gain fiber and provides the optical signals to an optical fiber. The optical fiber is arranged to guide opti cal signals from the optical coupler along an optical path toward the integrated optics chip such that optical signals from the gain fiber are input to the fiber optic sensing coil to form counter-propagating waves therein. The counter-propag ating waves traverse the sensing coil and then combine in the integrated optics chip to form a gyro output signal. A depolarizer is placed in the optical path between the first optical coupler and the integrated optics chip to prevent random changes in the state of polarization of optical signals propagating between the gain fiber and the integrated optic chip.
