Abstract:
Borated amine salts of dihydrocarbyl monothiophosphoric acids, and lubricating and functional fluid compositions containing said borated amine salts. The lubricating and functional fluid compositions have improved extreme pressure properties and high temperature stability. The borated amine salts of the invention may be characterized by formulae (I), (II), (III) or mixtures thereof, wherein R1 and R2 are each independently hydrocarbyl groups containing from 1 to about 30 carbon atoms. In one preferred embodiment, the amine salts are derived from hydroxyhydrocarbyl amines. The lubricating and functional fluid compositions may contain, in addition to the borated amine salt, at least one nitrogen-containing composition prepared by the reaction of a hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid-producing compound with at least about one-half equivalent, per equivalent of acid-producing compound, of an amine containing at least one hydrogen attached to a nitrogen atom. The lubricating compositions of the present invention are particularly useful as lubricating oils, functional fluids and greases.

More particularly, the oil-based lubricating and functional fluid compositions of the present invention comprise a major amount of oil and a minor amount of (A) at least one amine or metal salt of at least one monothiophosphoric acid of formulae (I) or (II) or mixtures thereof wherein R and R are each independently hydrocarbyl groups, X is a metal or an ammonium group, and when X is a metal, n is an integer equal to the valence of the metal, and when X is an ammonium group, n=1, and (B) at least one soluble nitrogen-containing composition prepared by the reaction of a hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid-producing compound with at least about one-half equivalent, per equivalent of acid producing compound, of an amine containing at least one hydrogen attached to a nitrogen atom. Preferably, the amine salts of the phosphoric acids utilized in the lubricating compositions of the present invention are derived from primary or tertiary amines, and the soluble nitrogen-containing compositions (B) also contain boron. The lubricating compositions of the present invention are particularly useful as lubricating oils or greases. Aqueous systems, and a method for preparing O-hydrocarbyl-S-hydrocarbyl monothiophosphates also are described herein.
