Abstract:
An interpolymer composition comprising monomer-derived units of (i) at least one of an aliphatic olefin containing from 2 to 30 carbon atoms and a vinyl aromatic monomer, and (ii) at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated acylating agent; wherein a portion of said acylating agent monomers is esterified and wherein a portion of said acylating agent monomers is condensed with at least one aromatic amine, provides good viscosity modification and dispersancy performance.
Abstract:
An acylated hydrocarbon polymer is aminated by reacting a primary or secondary aromatic amine which is solid at room temperature with an acyl group of the polymer, by: supplying a melt of the acylated polymer; supplying a solution of the aromatic amine in a polar aprotic solvent which has a boiling point of at least about 15° C, a melting point below about 40° C, and a dielectric constant of at least about 5° at 25° C; mixing the solution at 140° C to 185° C; and cooling the resulting amine-reacted polymer with a liquid while retaining the polar aprotic solvent in the polymer.
Abstract:
A composition of the reaction product of (a) an isobutylene-diene copolymer having thereon groups containing carboxylic acid functionality or reactive equivalent thereof, derived from an alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic compound; and (b) an amine component comprising at least one aromatic amine containing at least one N-H group capable of condensing with said carboxylic acid functionality, is a useful dispersant viscosity modifier.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject mixture containing an interpolymer derived from a low mol.wt. olefin or vinyl aromatic compound and an A,B-unsaturated aliphatic acid, and capable of being added to lubricant compositions to impart excellent low temperature characteristics, etc., thereto. SOLUTION: This mixture contains an esterified carboxyl group-containing interpolymer having a reducing specific viscosity(RSV) of about 0.05-2. The esterfied carboxyl group-containing interpolymer is derived from at least two kinds of monomers including (A) a 2-30C aliphatic olefin or vinyl aromatic monomer and (B) an α,β-unsaturated acylating agent (preferably an unsaturated aliphatic acid). The mixture contains at least two of constituents selected from the group consisting of four kinds of specific esters. The esters, especially nitrogen-containing esters, can enhance the dispersibility of other additives and impurities (e.g. soil, water, etc.) in lubricant compositions.
Abstract:
Mixtures of esterified carboxy-containing interpolymers and additive concentrates and lubricating oil compositions containing same. Residual acidity of the esterified interpolymers may be neutralized by reaction with an amine.

Abstract:
The invention provides a lubricating composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity and a block copolymer. The block copolymer may contain (a) a hydrophobic first block having C1_30 alkyl (meth)acrylic units, wherein at least 50 wt % of the C1 _30 alkyl (meth)acrylic units are C 12-15 alkyl (meth)acrylic units, and up to 50 wt % of the C1_30 alkyl (meth)acrylic units are C 16-20 alkyl (meth)acrylic units, with the proviso that alkyl groups of the C1 _30 alkyl (meth)acrylic units have an average total number of carbon atoms of at least 8; and (b) a second block having (meth)acrylic units further having a heteroatom-containing group providing a polar group. The invention further relates to a method of lubricating an internal combustion engine by lubricating the engine with the lubricating composition. The invention further relates to the use of the block copolymer as an emulsifier and/or pour point depressant.
