Abstract:
Lubricating and functional fluid compositions are described which comprise at least one oil of lubricating viscosity and an extreme-pressure and friction-modifying amount of (A) at least one phosphite ester characterized by the formula (I) wherein R1 is a straight-chain hydrocarbyl group and R2 is a branched-chain hydrocarbyl group. The invention also relates to compositions which comprise the combination of such phosphite esters as represented by Formula I and various sulfur-containing compositions. The compositions comprising said combinations also are useful in lubricating and functional fluid compositions including lubricating oils and greases. Aqueous systems containing the phosphite esters represented by Formula I as well as combinations of phosphite esters with sulfur-containing compositions also are described.

This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising at least abo ut 30 % by weight at least one mineral oil, having a kinematic viscosity of les s than about 8 cSt at 100.degree.C, (A) from about 15% to about 40% by weight of at least one polymer, and (B) up to about 30 % by weight of at least one fluidizing agent , provided that when the fluidizing agent is a poly.alpha.-olefin having a kinematic viscosity from about 2 to about 30 cSt at 100.degree.C, then the poly.alpha.-olefin is present in an amount up to about 12% by weight, wherein the lubricating composition has a shear loss of less than about 15% in the 20 hour taper bearing shear test. The invention also relates to concentrates used in preparing lubricating compositions. The present combination of components provides good low and high temperature properties especially when used in combination with one or more mineral oils. In one aspect, the compositions provide improved oxidation resistance.

A grease of an oil of lubricating viscosity, a polyolefin having grafted acid functionality, a metallic species capable of interacting with the acid functionality of said polyolefin to cause association among the acid groups and a co-thickening agent, has improved rheological properties. The co-thickening agent and the metallic species can together comprise a gelled overbased material, particularly an over-based carboxylate.

This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising at least about 30% by weight of at least one mineral oil, having a kinematic viscosity of less than about 8 cSt at 100 DEG C, (A) from about 5% to about 30% by weight at least one polymer having a Mw less than about 10,000, and (B) from about 2% to about 12% by weight of a polymer having a Mw greater than about 15,000, wherein the lubricating composition has a shear loss of less than about 15% in the 20 hour taper bearing shear test. The invention also relates to concentrates used in preparing shear stable lubricating compositions. The present combination of components provides good low and high temperature properties to mineral oils, even at high treat levels. These lubricants have good shear stability and in one aspect have improved oxidation resistance.
