Abstract:
A composition suitable for reducing sludge and degradation of elastomer seals in engines comprises an oil of lubrication viscosity and a minor amount of a sludge preventing/seal protecting nitrogen containing dispersant, which is a reaction product of a hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic acylating agent having a limited amount of low molecular weight substituent; and a polyamine or condensed polyamine containing less than 20 mole percent of polyamine components of 6 or fewer nitrogen atoms.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lubricating oil composition nonproblematic in sludge formation and the deterioration of a sealing agent during a stop-and-go drive under high-humidity and low-temperature conditions by mixing an oil having lubricating viscosity with a specified thiocarbamate and an aromatic aldehyde and/or an oxirane-ring-containing epoxide. SOLUTION: This thiocarbamate is represented by formula I [wherein R1 and R2 are each a 3-5C alkyl, an aryl, or an aralkyl or they may be combined with each other to form an alicyclic or heterocyclic ring together with the N atom; n is 1 or 2; when n is 1, T is a monovalent metal or CR3R4(CR12R13)aQ (wherein a is 0 or 1; R3, R4, R12 and R13 are each H, an alkyl or an aryl; Q is formula II, III or the like (wherein R5 is H, an alkyl or an aralkyl); and when n is 2, T is a divalent metal or a hydrocarbylene). The aromatic aldehyde used is vanillin, for example. The epoxide used is an alkyl ester of a vegetable epoxide, for example. 2-50 pts.wt. aromatic aldehyde or the like is used per 10 pts.wt. thiocarbamate.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lubricating oil composition nonproblematic in the formation of sludge and the deterioration of a sealing agent during stop-and-go drive under high-humidity and low-temperature conditions by mixing an oil having lubricating viscosity with and a nitrogen-containing dispersant comprising a Mannich reaction product derived from a specified phenol and an aromatic aldehyde and/or an oxirane-ring-containing epoxide. SOLUTION: A nitrogen-containing dispersant has a total alkali value of 30-160. A Mannich reaction product is formed from a phenol containing one 30C or higher aliphatic substituent, formaldehyde and an amine compound containing ethylenepolyamine. The aromatic aldehyde used is vanillin, for example. The epoxide having terminal and/or internal oxirane rings is a 1-8C alkyl ester of a vegetable oil epoxide, for example. The nitrogen-containing dispersant is used in an amount of 2-75 pts.wt. aromatic aldehyde or the like per 100 pts.wt. Mannich reaction product.
