Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved attenuating element capable of being used in coupling to all types of optical fibers. SOLUTION: The attenuating element is provided with a block shaped head, the head is provided with a tapered side wall and a chamfered part extending along the side wall and the lower flat surface, a neck is extended from the lower flat surface of the head and further an attenuating disk is extended from the neck. The attenuating element is assembled and arranged so as to incline at the angle of 90 deg.-82 deg. to the longitudinal axis of a matching sleeve used in coupling to the optical fiber. Thus, the attenuating element is adaptable to coupling to the optical fiber in either case when the end surface of a ferrule is mutually matched or inclined to the longitudinal axis of a matching sleeve. Also, the attenuating element is selectively assembled and arranged so as to rotate between facing ferrule end surfaces within the matching sleeve with respect to the longitudinal axis of the attenuating element.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the contamination of an optical fiber and to protect a sleeve housing and the optical fiber against damage by connecting landings to a bore extending in the longitudinal direction and tapering these landings toward the second end of a longitudinally long member, and making the landings surely hold the sleeve housing in the central bore of the longitudinally long member. SOLUTION: The longitudinally long member 18 includes the central bore 22 which is delineated at the first end 18a and extends in the longitudinal direction and the plural landings 24 which are continuous with or adjacent to the central bore 22. The plural landings 24 are tapered from the first end 18a toward the second end 18b of the longitudinally long member 18. When a dust cover 10 is arranged in an adapter, the dust cover is aligned within the adapter by the rectangular cross section of the longitudinally long member 18 and the tapered outside surface of the longitudinally long member 18. When the dust cover 10 is slid in the adapter, the sleeve housing engages the tapered landings 24 and is tightly engaged by the landings 24.
