Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a crystalline material which is usable with an electro-optic modulator operative at a high frequency and wide range wavelength and exhibits a high peak absorbance difference and high peak refractive index difference. SOLUTION: The crystalline material obtainable from III-V, II-VI or IV semiconductor microcrystals is embedded into a polymer material, by which the optical material indicating the high peak absorbance difference and high peak refractive index difference is obtd. The crystalline material is a CdSe crystal having a size of a diameter below 5.8 mn, more preferably a diameter below about 4 nm and is embedded into poly(vinyl pyridine). The crystalline material inserted between two electrodes delineates the optical modulator. The crystalline material of which 10% crystals are embedded into the polymer exhibits the absorbance difference spectrum (ΔA) of about 50 cm at a wavelength of about 610 nm and the refractive index difference (Δn) of about 10 at a wavelength of about 625 nm by impressing voltage of 100 V.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently convent injected electric power to light stimulated emission, in an organic laser which is pumped electrically. SOLUTION: A device having a single solid-state light source is realized. The light source has a layer structure, constituted of a plurality of layers containing two conductor layers 131, 132 between which first luminescent organic material 14 is sandwiched. Contacts for making a current flow in the part between the conductor layers are installed, and incoherent electromagnetic radiation 16 of a first wavelength is obtained from the first organic mateal 14. The layer structure has an optical waveguide constituted of a first clad region 171 and a second clad region 172 between which a core region 18 is sandwiched. The optical waveguide is arranged so that at least a part of the incoherent electromagnetic radiation 16 of the first wavelength is received by the optical waveguide. The core region 18 absorbs the incoherent electromagnetic radiation of the firs wavelength and generates coherent electromagnetic radiation of a second wavelength.

Abstract: An organic laser according to the invention comprises an electrically pumped source of incoherent radiation (16) with organic active region (14), and further comprises a waveguide structure that receives the incoherent radiation. The core (18) of the waveguide comprises organic material that absorbs the incoherent radiation and emits coherent radiation (19) of longer wavelength. The laser forms a unitary structure, with the source of incoherent radiation being close to the waveguide core, exemplarily less than 10 lambda from the core, where lambda is the laser wavelength. Exemplarily the laser is embodied in a planar waveguide laser, in a microdisk laser, or in a laser comprising a photonic bandgap structure.
