Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of a wide band access system by providing a video signal distribution system composed of plural MPEG2 decoders with a centralized video controller for receiving channel selection from a viewer. SOLUTION: The video signal distribution system composed of an optical network unit(ONU) 106 receives a video ATM cell from a video server through a wide band network and distributes video signals through a coaxial cable network to plural viewers with analog broadcasting waves. The ONU 106 receives the channel selection from a remote controller owned by every viewer of the program transmission destination through an RF receiver 301 and requests the transmission of a required channel to the video server. The analog broadcasting wave of the desired channel is generated and distributed by any idle one of plural program devices 303-1 to 303-M composed of VC filters 305, MPEG2 decoders 306, NTSC encoders 307 and up converters 308.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assign bandwidth by a durst, whose length of upstream transmission is variable. SOLUTION: In an output division passive optical network constituting a fiber for an end user, time division multiplexing/time division multiple accessing communication is used for downstream/upstream transmission through the fiber. Plural optical network units(ONU) are connected to the terminal device of the end user. An ATM cell assembled by a fixed-length frame is addressed to the fixed ONU of an individual terminal. Each ONU sends one burst per frame consisting of a payload having a header and a variable-length byte. The length of each payload within a burst transmitted upstream by the ONU is decided as the function of the bandwidth condition of the terminal device. When the bandwidth condition in the ONU is varied, information is sent to an OLC, a bandwidth message is sent to the ONU, and a bandwidth managing message corrects the length of the payload.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the channel surfing of a viewer by stopping the change of a channel during the time of an advertisement by a video server for distributing a video signal containing the advertisement for which service charges such as video-on-demand are charged to an advertiser in place of the viewer. SOLUTION: A video server 101 preserves an inputted broadcasting video signal in a video preserving server 201 after MPEG2 compression encoding. A video service controller 202 receives a transmission request from the viewer through a TDMA inside an ATM cell and a bidirectional link 109 and transmits the video signal of a desired program. All programs are preserved in the video preserving server 201 in the state of removing advertisements and corresponding to the program, the program is transmitted while inserting the advertisement preserved in the video preserving server 201 separately in real time. During the time of the advertisement of the on-demand program charged to the advertiser, the video service controller 202 does not respond to the change of the channel.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide communication equipment for time division multiple access(TDMA) without the loss of a transmission band caused by in-band raising. SOLUTION: A communication network 100 has a video server 101 for supplying a down video signal to a wide area communication network 102 and responds to up communication including a selection message. The wide band communication network 102 supplies the communication signal to an optical transmission line terminal 103 and the communication signal is supplied from the optical transmission line terminal 103. When the power source of client equipment for transmitting the TDMA signal is turned on or transmission is performed corresponding to a specified command generated locally or remotely, an out-band tone is transmitted and when the equipment is arranged and the power source is recovered again after a power failure or temporary interruption or when the equipment is connected again after disconnection at the time of verifying the equipment, the equipment is initialized.

Abstract: In a power splitting passive optical network (PSPON) (101) which provides fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), time division multiplexing/time division multiple access (TDM/TDMA) communication is employed for downstream/upstream transmission over a fiber. A framed structure is used for the downstream transmission of ATM cells from an optical line card (OLC) to a splitter (104) in the outside plant and thence to a plurality of optical network units (ONUs) (106) which are each associated with a home or business. The ONU at each home/business is connected to end user terminal equipment such as one or more PCs (109), televisions (111), and telephones (107). The ATM cells transmitted within each fixed length frame may be addressed to a specific ONU for a particular end user terminal, or they may be broadcast to many or all ONUs. An ATM cell may also carry a control channel or messages directed to the ONUs. A framed structure is also employed for upstream burst transmission from the plural ONUs to the OLC. Specifically, in the upstream direction each ONU transmits one burst per frame that includes a header and a payload containing a variable number of bytes. The length of each payload in a burst transmitted upstream by an ONU is determined as a function of the bandwidth requirements of the end user terminal equipment connected to that ONU as well as the bandwidth requirements of the end user terminal equipment at the other ONUs. When the bandwidth requirements at an ONU changes, that information is communicated upstream to the OLC where an upstream bandwidth message is created and transmitted downstream to the ONUs. That upstream bandwidth management message modifies the length of the payload in the burst in a subsequent frame transmitted by that ONU whose bandwidth requirements have changed, and also changes the locations within the frame that the other ONUs transmit their bursts if they transmit in the frame after that payload-length modified ONU.

Abstract: An advertisement delivery system employs an advertisement delivery servi ce that discourages viewers from channel surfing. To this end, advertisers agre e to pay at least a portion, if not all, of the consumer's premium video services charge s, if in turn, the consumer agrees to watch the advertisements targeted to him/her as a function of an agreed upon interest profile. Viewers and advertisers subscribe to the advertisement delivery service, and deliver specific advertisements to a subscriber as a function of, for example, the particular household it is being delivered to, type of program, time of day, day of the week, a subscriber's interest profile or the like. To this end, television programming and advertisements are supplied to subscribers from a central video server that is informed when a subscriber has made a change in the channel being viewed. Additionally, the video server can insert point-to-point advertisements, i.e ., insert different advertisements directed toward different viewers or groups of view s, even if the program to be viewed is a broadcast program. Channel surfing is discouraged in one embodiment of the invention by supplying the same advertisement in the same commercial interval to all the subscribed channels for a particular subscriber. In another embodiment of theinvention, when channel surfing is initiated while an advertisement is playing, the advertisement playout is "paused" until the subscriber returns to the original channel that was being viewed. Once the subscriber returns to the original channel, the playing out of the advertisement is automatically resumed. In still another embodiment of the invention, the subscriber is controllably inhibite d from selecting a channel other than the one presently being viewed during the commercial intervals.

Abstract: A single centralized video controller is employed to convert and distribute video channels to one or more analog TVs (i.e., viewing devices or the like). This is realized without the need for changes to either the TVs or the interconnecting COAX. Specifically, the centralized controller includes one or more MPEG2 decoders , the number of which depends on a desired number of active TVs to be used in viewing different programs, and one or more wireless (e.g., radio frequency (RF)) communications links to television controllers (i.e., remote control units) associated on a one-to-one basis with the desired number of TVs. In operation, channel selection for each of the one or more TVs is communicated up-stream from the centralized controller to a remote video server and, therein, to a video services controller. The video services controller causes the video server to transmit only the selected program channels to the local centralized video controller. However, when the video channel is alrea dy being supplied from the video server to an optical line terminal and, specifically , to an optical line card to which the requesting centralized controller is connected to, there is no need to communicate the channel request to the video server. The optical line terminal simply supplies the requested channel via an optical line card to the additional requesting centralized controller and, in turn, to the requesting TV.
