Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable type electronic device having an improved display. SOLUTION: Two or more of displays or screens used to display various kinds of subsets of image signals are arranged in a portable type electronic device 100 or other electronic device. Displaying possibility for a device having a very large screen can be simulated by this manner. This device has an opened or operating form with plural screens utilized to display image signals, and a closed or non-operating form with a whole or part of the screens folded together or put in order to reduce device size for storing or carrying. By simulating operation for a large display, the electronic device displays a larger quantity of usable information than that in a conventional device having a single small screen.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques concerning the integration of computer graphics and video by changing the expression of an object from a video expression to an expression modeled as computer graphics, and receiving the selection instruction of the object. SOLUTION: Concerning a current video frame to be displayed on a video screen required to start pop-up, the presence/absence of an object is discriminated (step 405). A display engine routine of computer graphics is activated corresponding to each determined object (step 407). The location on a display screen is determined corresponding to each object for which the display engine routine of computer graphics is executed (step 409). Then, each object within the view range of a viewer is rendered (step 411).

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the channel surfing of a viewer by stopping the change of a channel during the time of an advertisement by a video server for distributing a video signal containing the advertisement for which service charges such as video-on-demand are charged to an advertiser in place of the viewer. SOLUTION: A video server 101 preserves an inputted broadcasting video signal in a video preserving server 201 after MPEG2 compression encoding. A video service controller 202 receives a transmission request from the viewer through a TDMA inside an ATM cell and a bidirectional link 109 and transmits the video signal of a desired program. All programs are preserved in the video preserving server 201 in the state of removing advertisements and corresponding to the program, the program is transmitted while inserting the advertisement preserved in the video preserving server 201 separately in real time. During the time of the advertisement of the on-demand program charged to the advertiser, the video service controller 202 does not respond to the change of the channel.

Abstract: A portable or other electronic device has two or more display devices or scr eens that can be used to display different subsets of image signals. The effect is that the d evice simulates the display capabilities of devices having much larger screens. The device has an open o r active configuration, in which the multiple screens are available for displaying image signals, an d a closed or inactive configuration, in which some or all of the multiple screens are folded toget her or otherwise stowed away to reduce the size of the device for storage and/or carrying. By simula ting large-display operations, electronic devices according to the present invention are capabl e of presenting more useable information to the user than is otherwise possible using prior art d evices having a single small screen.

Abstract: For a world that has a portion of the world distant from the point of view of th e user represented in only two dimensions as a video on a video screen, when an ob ject on the video screen undergoes a trajectory that takes at least a portion of it to a location in the world that is not represented by the video but instead is a location in the world that is represented by computer graphics, in addition to being able to continue to see s uch an object when it is rendered as computer graphics in the computer graphics part of the world, i.e., popped out from the video, one is able to interact with such an obj ect. Thus, an object which pops out from a video into the computer graphics part of the wor ld may be "investigated" by a viewer of the world. For example, the user could enter a store which popped out of the video, and engage in virtual shopping therein. The parti cular store which is actually entered may be customized on a per user basis, e.g., as a function of geography. When the proprietor of a virtual store, or his representative, e.g ., electronic agent, detects the avatar of one or more persons in the vicinity of the avatar o f a store for which such proprietor's store corresponds to the virtual store for such passing persons, a message may be transmitted to such passing persons.

Abstract: Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) or other network information identifie rs embedded in television signals are processed in order to permit viewers to customize the display of a corresponding program. In an illustrative embodiment, at a time prior to the scheduled display of a program or portion thereof, a given viewer makes a selection of one of a number of available alternate characteristics for the program, such as one of a number of available alternate endings. At a later time, a base URL embedded in the television signal is extracted and processed using the viewer selection in order to generate a combined URL. The combined URL is then used to establish a connection over a network with a corresponding web site or other information source, and information i s retrieved from the web site and stored in a memory. The retrieved information is subsequently taken from the memory and used to modify the manner in which the program is displayed to the viewer. For example, the retrieved information may include video which is displayed to the viewer in place of a portion of the program.
