Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a packet network such as an ATM link and the like or a link for providing maintenance of call control for a roaming mobile unit at a gateway mobile switching centre(MSC). SOLUTION: A base station, in addition to specifying a particular address (or channel) referred to as a data link connection identifier(DLCI) on PHV, provides a gateway MSC with a packet address to be used as an address for a voice packet that is received by a roaming mobile unit from the gateway MSC (though a serving MSC), thereby forming a full duplex packet link. The packet link becomes a voice path between the base station and serving MSC and the gateway MSC, and all communications to and from the roaming unit are routed through the gateway MSC. Thereby, the gateway MSC maintains control on all calls about the roaming mobile unit so as to perform enhanced call functions such as call waiting and third party call and the like.

Abstract: The present invention supports a voice messaging service in a wireless communications system. A subscriber accesses a voice messaging system (VMS) through a wireless device in order to retrieve voice messages that are deposited into the subscriber's voice mailbox. The subscriber may wish to return a call to a call sender. The call is established to the call sender's directory number throug h a serving mobile switching center (MSC) in concert with a service control point (SCP) and an intelligent peripheral (IP). The subscriber may return to the VMS so that th e subscriber can resume the voice mail session. The subscriber ends the call o r optionally enters a feature rebound code. The IP detects an associated call event and initiates a connection between the subscriber and the VMS. The IP notifies t he SCP, causing the SCP to instruct the serving MSC to re-establish the connection between the subscriber and the VMS.

Abstract: The apparatus, method and system embodiments of the present invention provide for maintaining call control at a gateway mobile switching center (MSC), for roaming mobile units, utilizing a packet network or link, such as an ATM lin k. The preferred system embodiment includes a gateway MSC, a serving MSC, and a bas e station having a wireless link with the roaming mobile unit. The gateway MSC includes a protocol handler for voice (PHV). For any given incoming call for the roaming mobile unit or outgoing call from the roaming mobile unit, the gatew ay MSC designates a specific address (or channel) on the PHV, referred to as a data link connection identifier (DLCI), for use as an address for voice packets to be received from the roaming mobile unit via the base station and serving MSC, and the base station also provides a base station packet address to the gateway MSC, for use as a n address for voice packets to be received from the gateway MSC (through the serving MSC) for the roaming mobile unit, thereby creating a full duplex packet link. The packet link serves as a voice path between the base station, the serving MSC, and gatewa y MSC, with all communication to and from the roaming mobile unit routed through th e gateway MSC. The gateway MSC thereby maintains all call control for the roaming mobile unit for the implementation of advanced calling features, such as cal l waiting and three-way calling. In the preferred embodiment, the DLCI is included as a new parameter for ANSI-41 compatible messages. In addition, new ANSI-41 compatib le messages are also utilized, a Gateway Origination Request containing the bas e station packet address and a Gateway Origination Request Return Result containing th e new DLCI parameter.

Abstract: The present invention supports a voice messaging service in a wireless communications system. The wireless communications system comprises a servin g mobile switching center (MSC), a service control point (SCP), and a voice messaging system (VMS). A subscriber accesses the VMS through a wireless device to retrieve voice messages that are deposited into the subscriber's voice mailbox. When listening to a voice message that is deposited by a call sender, the subscriber may wi sh to return a call to the call sender. In such a case, the subscriber initiates the call by invoking a call sender option. The call is established to the call sender's directory number through the serving MSC in concert with the SCP. After completing the call t o the call sender, the subscriber may return to the VMS and resume the voice mail session at a desired location corresponding with the subscriber's previous interactions with the VMS.
