    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the power level of a control channel with high reliability regardless of fluctuation in a power level for each wavelength channel and fluctuation in each time slot by providing an optical control channel before a plurality of optical amplifiers in a link. SOLUTION: The link control by this device is realized by a feedback configuration consisting of a power tap 18, a photodetector 20 and a control circuit 22. The feedback configuration responds to the fluctuation in the transmission power level detected by the photodetector 20 by adjusting an output error signal, controlling an output power level of an optical source 24 and providing an output of a control signal for a wavelength λc in a gain band of the optical amplifiers. Thus, the control channel wavelength λc produced in this way is fed back to the link through a wavelength selective coupler 26. The power level of an optical signal fed to the optical amplifiers is maintained by controlling the power level of the control channel.

    Abstract: La presente invencion se refiere a un sistema y método para proteger todos los amplificadores en un enlace entre elementos de red de direccionamiento de longitud de onda de una red optica. De acuerdo con la invencion, se agrega un canal de control optico antes de una pluralidad de amplificadores opticos, de preferencia al primer amplificador, en un enlace. Para evitar inadecuada carga de enlaces corriente abajo, el canal de control se desprende o retira en el siguiente elemento de red con direccionamiento de longitud de onda. La potencia del canal de control se ajusta automáticamente utilizando un circuito de realimentacion rápida para mantener constantes substancialmente la potencia total de los canales de señal y el canal de control en la alimentacion del primer amplificador después del bucle de realimentacion. According to the invention, an optical control channel is added before a plurality of optical amplifier, preferably the first amplifier, in a link. To prevent improper loading of downstream links, the control channel is stripped off at the next wavelength routing network element. The power of the control channel is automatically adjusted using a fast feedback circuit to hold substantially constant the total power of the signal channels and the control channel at the input of the first amplifier following the feedback loop. In this manner, channel loading of all optical amplifiers in the link is maintained substantially constant, and the incidence of error bursts, as might otherwise result when one or more channels are added or dropped due to a network fault or reconfiguration, is substantially reduced.
