    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the power level of a control channel with high reliability regardless of fluctuation in a power level for each wavelength channel and fluctuation in each time slot by providing an optical control channel before a plurality of optical amplifiers in a link. SOLUTION: The link control by this device is realized by a feedback configuration consisting of a power tap 18, a photodetector 20 and a control circuit 22. The feedback configuration responds to the fluctuation in the transmission power level detected by the photodetector 20 by adjusting an output error signal, controlling an output power level of an optical source 24 and providing an output of a control signal for a wavelength λc in a gain band of the optical amplifiers. Thus, the control channel wavelength λc produced in this way is fed back to the link through a wavelength selective coupler 26. The power level of an optical signal fed to the optical amplifiers is maintained by controlling the power level of the control channel.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent laser oscillation of a WDM ring network by providing a node link and a protective means in a network, providing an optical fiber part and an access node site in the node link and making the protective means change the optical transmission characteristics of the inactive part of the trans mission band of the network. SOLUTION: Optical amplifiers 111-113 are erbium dope fiber amplifiers EDFA and supply optical gain for compensating loss in the node link. Thus, for instance, the amplifier 111 is arranged so as to compensate the loss in grating, a coupler and a fiber connector of an optical fiber span 104 and a WAD element 107. In normal installation, the node links, that are the respective ones of 101/104-103/106, are provided with the amplifier gain for canceling the loss by the fiber and WAD in the links.

    Abstract: A wide band optical amplifier employing a split-band architecture in which an optical signal is split into several independent sub-bands which then pass in parallel through separate branches of the optical amplifier. Each branch may be optimized for the sub-band that traverses it. The independent sub-bands are combined before output, resulting in a broad band, high efficiency amplifier. Alternative, hybrid split-band amplifiers are described. As a result of their desirable characteristics, these wide band optical amplifiers may be used in dense WDM communications systems.

    Abstract: La presente invencion se refiere a un sistema y método para proteger todos los amplificadores en un enlace entre elementos de red de direccionamiento de longitud de onda de una red optica. De acuerdo con la invencion, se agrega un canal de control optico antes de una pluralidad de amplificadores opticos, de preferencia al primer amplificador, en un enlace. Para evitar inadecuada carga de enlaces corriente abajo, el canal de control se desprende o retira en el siguiente elemento de red con direccionamiento de longitud de onda. La potencia del canal de control se ajusta automáticamente utilizando un circuito de realimentacion rápida para mantener constantes substancialmente la potencia total de los canales de señal y el canal de control en la alimentacion del primer amplificador después del bucle de realimentacion. De esta manera, la carga de canal de todos los amplificadores opticos en el enlace se mantiene substancialmente constante y se reduce substancialmente la incidencia de ráfagas de error como de otra forma podría resultar cuando uno o más canales se agregan o retiran debido a una falla o reconfiguracion de red.
