    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic apparatus which can be cooled sufficiently utilizing natural convection, without requiring forced cooling with fan. SOLUTION: This cooled electronic apparatus comprises a heat dissipating enclosed container 2. The enclosed container 2 is cast of a light metal LM20 and provided with an extension surface 8 of fins, or the like, for forming a channel 12 extending in the vertical direction. Since a light metal LM20 is employed in place of an ordinary light metal LM6, the temperature of the essential components in the container can be improved by 3K (absolute temperature).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a frame structure for cellular telecommunication systems. SOLUTION: In order to double the size of cells for a UMTS/ UTRAN(Universal Mobile Terrestrial System/UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) system operating in time division mode (TDD) from 3.75 km to 7.5 km, the node B station defines a guard period (66) for a downlink slot followed by an adjacent uplink slot to be longer than the guard period (68) for an uplink slot, followed by an adjacent downlink slot, whereby the cell size is extended. Each UE(user equipment) adjusts its timing, in response to timing deviation signals (64) transmitted at the start of each downlink burst, so as to transmit an uplink burst which arrive at the node B, at the beginning of the next uplink slot.

    Abstract: Externally mounted enclosures for mobile radio base stations potentially experience a wide range of ambient temperatures. In temperate climates, it is possible for the heat generated by the internal electronics to be dissipated. by natural convention. In hotter climates this becomes difficult or impossible, however. An enclosure is disclosed having an inner case 2 for containing the equipment. The case 2 is formed with heat conductive fins 4 extending vertically, in use, so as to define channels 8 therebetween. An outer case 10 contains the inner case and defines air passages 12 into which the fins project. The outer case has vents 14 and 16 to allow convection through the channels between the fins. A fan unit 24 is located at or towards the upper end of the air passages and laterally of the air passages to draw air therefrom. Control means is provided for controlling operation of the fan unit according to temperature. The fan unit is located so that it does not obstruct the air passages and thus does not impede natural convection. When the fan unit is switched on, it increases the flow of air in the channels between the fins so increasing cooling.

    Abstract: An enclosure for electrical equipment comprises a housing 6 and a fan cooling unit 4 attached to the housing 6. The housing 6 has an air inlet 18 and an opening 22. The opening 22 leads into the cooling unit 4. The cooling unit has an air outlet 24 to allow air 26 to exit the housing 6. The air 26 exiting the air outlet 24 creates a pressure differential in a region external to the housing below the air outlet 26. The pressure differential causes an additional air flow 28 along the external surface of the housing 6. The air outlet 24 may be angled. The air outlet 24 may be a louver opening. The housing 6 may have a series of protruding fins 8 on its external surface defining channels for the additional air flow 28. The enclosure may have a channel for the additional air flow 28 defined between a solar panel and a side of the housing 6. The enclosure may be used for cooling the circuits of a mobile communication system base station.

    Abstract: Wireless telecommunications apparatus comprises a base station and a user terminal. The base station sends data to the user terminal on a first channel (DL1) at a first frequency (f1) in selected time slots and the user terminal sends data to the base station on a second channel (UL2) at a second frequency (f2) in selected time slots. These two frequencies are different. The network also either includes a transmitter which transmits further data to the user equipment on a shared channel (DL0) at a third frequency (f0) in time slots in which the other data is not being sent or includes a receiver which receives further data from the user equipment on a shared channel at the third frequency in time slots in which the other data is not being sent. The apparatus can be a UMTS or other third generation system.
