Abstract: The invention relates to communication systems in which end-user devices contend for access to shared resources of a channel in the communica tionsystem. End-user devices sending data in packets ove r the communication channel piggyback requests for changes in allocated resources for transmission of an other packet. A system controller changes the resource allocated to individual end -user devices depending upon the piggyback requests, in order to optimise the thro ughput of the channel. A packet switched network may thus act like a circuit switch ed network if required.

Abstract: The invention relates to mobile cellular communication systems in which asymmetric access to a time division duplex (TDD) communication channel is p rovided. The channel is divided (by TDD) into slots which are allocated to either upl ink communication or downlink communication by the base station in each cell. Ti ming of slots, and thus of compulsory uplink and downlink slots, is co-ordinated acr oss the cells of a system.
