Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a communication card from directly interfacing with a PSTN or other networks by providing a first part preventing an access to a PSTN connecting part on the communication card and a second part enabling communication between a cellular phone and the communication card when a connecting connector is connected with the communication card. SOLUTION: In a communication card modem 100, a 68 pin connector S3 is included at one tip part of the communication card modem 100 for connecting with a PC or PCMCIA type 11 slot of PDA. The other tip part is connected with a PSTN coupler S2 having interchangeability with a RJ-11 cable connector. The PSTN coupler S2 is a ZJACK. The communication card modem 100 includes a codec 108 for directly interfacing with a telephone line interface, a data access device and/or a PSTN or a cellular-phone.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To process call related information on the high voltage side of a telephone circuit inside a digital signal path by digitizing an analog signal from a telephone line while using the sigma/delta(Σ/Δ) or analog/digital(A/D) converter of low-power CODEC, to which power is supplied from a line, filtering and decoding digitized data. SOLUTION: A audio CODEC 104 is a Δ/Σ audio CODEC capable of operating in a reduced power mode for operating a Σ/Δor A/D converter 140 of switchable dimension number while using power extracted from a telephone line. By arranging the audio CODEC 104 capable of digitally processing and demodulating the call related information on the side of the line, costs for the reception circuit of the call related information (caller ID) can be reduced and the call related information can be received while using power from the line side.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and reliable digital access arrangement(DAA) which can be fed with power at least partially by an available line current provided by various countries. SOLUTION: This DAA adaptively enables an operation that is suitable as a condition guarantee by power supplied from the telephone line and meanwhile, satisfies relevant required conditions of many countries. In a line powered codec, a startup procedure for an international line powered codec uses register setting, for instance, register setting of a specified country, and the register setting is fed with power from the low voltage side (e.g. a PC or modem side) of the line powered codec and maintained. Thus, a state in which the line powered codec is programmed can be maintained even during a low line power state, so the line powered codec does not always return to a default state by resetting due to a power loss in the telephone line.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a line powered COder/DECoder (codec). T he codec is comprised of a fine powered analog-to-digital converter and a line powered digital-to-analog converter. A DC current measurement module is provided to determine an amount of current available for use from a telephone line in an off-hook condition. The analog-to-digital converter and the digital-to-analog convert er are each adapted to be maintained in a reset condition when the DC current measuremen t module determines that insufficient current is available from the telephone line in the off-hook condition.

In the line powered codec, a startup procedure for the international line powered codec uses register settings, e.g., country-specific register settings, which are powered and maintained from the low voltage side (e.g., from the PC or modem side) of the line powered codec. In this way, even during low line power conditions the programmed state of the line powered codec can be maintained, thus a default condition will not necessarily returned to by the line powered codec upon reset due to a power loss in the telephone line. In another aspect, a charge storage device such as a charge capacitor is charged from a charge pump formed from a differential clock signal from the low voltage side. A current and voltage detection module in the line powered codec is always powered from the telephone line. Upon detection of an off-hook signal or a power down condition, the current detection module determines if/when the current and voltage on the telephone line is sufficient to power certain circuits on the line powered codec. If sufficient power is not present, the line powered codec does not power up. However, the line powered codec will power up if sufficient current is detected. In another aspect, a plurality of power rails may be provided. A first power rail may be associated with the line power, a second power rail may be associated with a low voltage side power source, e.g., a charge storage device. A third (and other) power rails may be switchably connected to either the first power rail or second power rail as line power conditions and on-hook/off-hook conditions warrant.
