    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for modeling a speech having desired rhythm characteristics. SOLUTION: The set of tags for defining rhythm characteristics is prepared, and the selected tag is arranged in the proper place of a text main body. Each tag imposes constraint on the rhythm characteristics of a speech to be generated by processing the text. The set of equations to be solved so that a curve for defining the rhythm characteristics across the range of words and phrases can be generated and the set of equations to be solved so that a curve for defining the rhythm characteristics of the respective words in the phrases can be generated are generated according to the processing of the speech text and the tag. The data defined by the curve can be used together with the text so that the speech having the rhythm characteristics defined by the tag can be generated. The set of tags is generated by the reading of the training text to be read by a target speaker, and a training corpus on which the rhythm characteristics of the target speaker are reflected is generated, and then the training corpus is analyzed so that the tag for modeling the rhythm characteristics of the training corpus can be generated.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for synthesizing speech from a text to convey a particular speaking style. SOLUTION: Repeated patterns of prosodic features-such as, for example, pitch, amplitude, spectral tilt, and/or duration-occurring at characteristic locations in the synthesized speech, are advantageously used to convey a particular chosen style. An illustrative text-to-speech synthesized system makes use of such a defined style to adjust the specified parameter of the synthesized speech in a non-uniform manner (i.e., in accordance with the defined feature pattern).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved gridded microwave tube equipped with a cold cathode, an anode, and a grid disposed between the anode and the cathode. SOLUTION: In one embodiment, the cold cathode has a refractory metal substrate and carbon nanotube emitters of 1 to 300 nm in diameter and 0.05 to 100 μm in length. The grid-cathode spacing is 1 to 100 μm. The grid has apertures of 0.5 to 100 μm in maximum size, and the thickness of the grid is 0.5 to 100 μm. Direct emission from the cathode to the grid material itself, which undesirably heats up the grid, is reduced either by; (a) providing a shadow mask between the grid and the emitters, or by; (b) selectively forming emitters in positions corresponding to the grid apertures. This microwave tube works at frequencies higher than 0.5 GHz, and it is advantageous to work at frequencies higher than 2 GHz.

    Abstract: An improved process for fabricating emitter structures from nanowires, wherein the nanowires are coated with a magnetic material to allow useful alignment of the wires in the emitter array, and techniques are utilized to provide desirable protrusion of the aligned nanowires in the final structure. In one embodiment, nanowires at least partially coated by a magnetic material are provided, the nanowires having an average length of about 0.1 .mu.m to about 10,000 .mu.m. The nanowires are mixed in a liquid medium, and a magnetic field is applied to align the nanowires. The liquid medium is provided with a precursor material capable of consolidation into a solid matrix, e.g., conductive particles or a metal salt, the matrix securing the nanowires in an aligned orientation. A portion of the aligned nanowires are exposed, e.g., by etching a surface portion of the matrix material, to provide desirable nanowire tip protrusion.

    Abstract: A gridded microwave tube contains a cold cathode, an anode, and a grid located between the anode and cathode. In one embodiment, the cold cathode has a refractory metal substrate (30,50,60,70,80,90) and carbon nanotube emitters (32,42,53,62,73), the emitters (32,42,53,62,73) having a diameter of 1 to 300nm and a length of 0.05 to 100µm. The grid-cathode spacing is 1 to 100µm, the grid (34,43,54,63,74) contains apertures having a maximum dimension of 0.5 to 100µm, and the grid thickness is 0.1 to 50µm. Emission from the cathode directly onto the grid material itself, which undesirably heats the grid, is reduced by either (a) the presence of a shadow mask (33) between the grid (34) and the emitters (32) or (b) selective formation of the emitters (42,53,62,73) on the surface of the substrate (50,60,70,80,90). The microwave tube operates at a frequency of greater than 0.5GHz, advantageously greater than 2GHz.
