    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To impart a wide tuning range and to unnecessitate continuous electric power by composing the device for inducing force between magnets and generating grating distortion by imparting magnetic field by an electromagnet. SOLUTION: A fiber grating has an optical fiber 11 of some length including a grating 12 composed of an area 13 whose refractive index is changed. The fiber in the grating area is fixed between a pair of magnets 14, 15 transferring force to the grating 12 by adhesion or mechanical attachment. A single or plural magnets (solenoids) realizing controllable magnetic field between them are arranged adjacent to the magnets 14, 15. In this case, when the same magnetic poles are adjacent the magnet is separated by magnetic force in the extending direction of the fiber grating. Reversely, when the reverse magnetic poles of the magnets 14, 15 are adjacent, the magnetic field from the electromagnets 16, 17 generates compressive distortion in the grating.
