    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a channel selector for selecting one or plural channels from input multi-channel signals for specifying channels to a desired address in an optical communication system. SOLUTION: This channel selector selects a channel by separating a part of input multi-channel optical signals passing through plural optical paths. After that, a desired phase response is added to this separated part. As the result, the channels interferes each other constructively/destructively. This channel selector 110 comprises plural input ports 115, plural output ports 117, a splitter 116, a combiner 119, an all-pass optical filter 118, and plural optical paths 125.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article such as a wavelength division multiplexer using a Bragg reflection Mach-Zehnder filter in which dependence on a coupler is reduced. SOLUTION: This Bragg reflection Mach-Zehnder filter 30 includes two plane optical waveguides 12 and 13, and each waveguide 12 and 13 includes interference arms 16 and 17 extended between two connecting areas. Each interference 16 and 17 is provided with a refractive index Bragg diffraction grating 18. This filter receives an optical input signal by one of the waveguides 12 and 13, and outputs a transmission signal transmitted through the Bragg diffraction grating 18 and a reflected signal reflected by the Bragg diffraction grating 18. In this case, the interference arms 16 and 17 introduce a πphase difference to the transmission signal, and the phase difference is not introduced to the reflected signal.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improve switchable filter by alternately arranging a phase shifter on at least one arm and reflection filters on respective arms on the middle section of the filter.     Abstract: The present invention provides NxN non-blocking switch modules using MMI-based switch elements. The arrangement requires a minimum of control elements to effect switching and uses no crossings of the signal waveguides. The switch control settings may be determined by following a simple and transparent algorithm for the set-up procedure. Very high-order switch fabrics comprising a variety of the taught non-blocking NxN switch modules are envisaged. Determination of the appropriate values for 'N' is a practical consideration which trades-off the performance of the individual switch modules with the complexity required of the associated module interconnection fabric. The spatial switch fabrics that may by built from the non-blocking MMI-based switch arrangements may be combined with both wavelength-division switches and time-division switches to form any combination of higher order space-wavelength-time switch.

    Abstract: A single-stage all-pass optical filter is disclosed that may be applied to generate a large tunable delay of an optical pulse train. The all-pass optical filter includes an input port for receiving an input optical pulse having a regular repetition rate; an output port; a splitter/combiner; and one feedback path. A plurality of frequency-dependent time delay periods are applied to the input optical pulse so that the filter is characterized by a time-delay spectrum having a plurality of delay peaks. The free-spectral range (FSR) of the filter, i.e., the spacing between the delay peaks, is matched to the regular repetition rate of the input optical pulse. This matching is accomplished by the FSR being equal to the repetition rate or offset from the repetition rate to a sufficiently small degree that each frequency of the pulse train will fall within the bandwidth of one of the plurality of delay peaks. This single-stage all-pass optical filter is advantageous for correcting linear chirp of a pulsed laser or synchronizing control signals in an optical time-division multiplexer/demultiplexer system.
