Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber connector adjustable even after being completely assembled. SOLUTION: A connector 11 is provided with the assembly having the member or flange which has the peripheral edge with many cut surfaces, whose shape is preferably a hexagon and which holds an enlarged ferrule 27. The connector 11 is provided with the forward housing part having an attaching area with many cut surfaces for the flange 26. The flange 26 can be separated from the attaching area for the rotation for adjustment because of being movable in the axial direction toward the back side of the housing against force of a spring. The connector 11 is adjustable by the increased rotation of the assembly when the flange 26 is separated.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adjusting wrench for adjusting an optical fiber connector. SOLUTION: The limited part extending from the enlarged part of an adjusting wrench is provided with the diameter larger than that of the opening of the ferrule housing part of an optical connector. A tubular member is projected from the limited part and the dimension of inside diameter is decided so as to slide the ferrule of the connector. The end of the tubular member 91 is provided with a pair of tanks 92, 93, which are composed so as to be adaptable to the inside of the front of the flange part of the ferrule barrel member of the connector or to the opening existing in the inside of the front. The distance from the surface of the limited member 86 to the tank is set so that the flange 26 is moved backward from meshing with the housing or the surface of the limited member 86 is abutted against the front surface of the housing before a spring member is bottomed within the housing by a pressure in the axial direction by means of the wrench. A ferrule barrel assembly is rotated with the wrench and whereby the angular direction of the eccentric vector of the ferrule is changed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an adjustment index tool used for deciding the degree of adjustment required for an adjustable optical fiber connector. SOLUTION: This adjustment index tool 51 is provided with a first fixing member, and the first fixing member is provided with a connector adapter 61 stuck to the first member, a second movable member within the first member and a spring loaded relating to the first member. The connector adapter 63 of a second member is aligned in the axial direction with the adapter within the first member. The movable member is increasingly rotated with respect to the fixing member by being pulled against the force of the spring in order to separate the ferrule of the connector within the adapter. The adapter is aligned within a split sleeve. An insertion loss is changed because of the rotation in the direction of an eccentric vector with respect to two connectors.

Abstract: An optical fiber connector that is tunable despite being filly assembled has a assembly having an enlarged ferrule holding member or flange that has a mult i- faceted periphery, preferably in the shape of a hexagon. The connector has a front housing portion that has a multi-faceted seating region for the flange. The flange i s disengageable from the seating region for tuning rotation by being movable axially toward the rear of the housing against the force of a spring. The connector can be tuned by incremental rotations of the assembly when the flange is disengaged.

Abstract: A tuning wrench for tuning optical fiber connectors has an enlarged portion from which extends a limiting portion having a diameter greater than the diameter of the opening in the ferrule housing portion of an optical connector. A tubular member protrudes from the limiting portion and has an internal diameter dimensioned to slide over the connector ferrule. The distal end of the tubular member has a pair of tangs adapted to fit within or openings in the front of the flange portion of the ferrule-barrel member of the connector. The distance from the face of the limiting member t o the tangs is such that axial pressure on the wrench moves the flange rearwardly out of engagement with its housing but the face of the limiting member butts agains t the front of the housing before the spring member within the housing bottoms. Rotation of the wrench thus causes rotation of the ferrule-barrel assembly to alter the angular orientation of the eccentricity vector of the ferrule.

Abstract: A tuning index tool for use in determining the degree of tuning necessary fo r a tunable optical fiber connector has a first stationary member having a connector adapter affixed thereto and a second movable member within the first member and spri ng loaded with respect thereto. The second member has a connector adapter affixed thereto axially aligned with the adapter in the first member. The movable member is incrementally rotatable with respect to the stationary member by being pulled against the spring force to disengage the ferrules of connectors in the adapters, which are aligned i n a split sleeve. rotation changes the orientation of the eccentricity vectors of the two connectors, and hence the insertion loss. Measurements of insertion loss are made, and the orientation of the connectors for minimum loss is noted. The number of incremental rotations of the tool indicates the incremental rotation of the ferrule of t he connector under test, the eccentricity vector orientation of the other connector being known, that is necessary to achieve minimum insertion loss for the connector with connector s have a known eccentricity vector orientation.
