Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved technology for drawing an optical fiber from a preform which is assembled by using a sol-gel over-cladding pipe. SOLUTION: This technology provides a core-rod and a core-rod assembly having a bushing installed on its end. The core-rod assembly is inserted into, hung, and fixed to the over-cladding pipe 20 which is not yet sintered. Both of the assembly and the pipe are heated to sinter the pipe, which results in the formation of a preform assembly. This assembly is arranged to the drawing tower by the drawing handle 14 mounted on it and is drawn for a formation of an optical fiber by over-cladding.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an overclad tube having extremely little warpage. SOLUTION: After a handle front end 22 is inserted into the internal cavity of a tube 10, a silica pin 30 is inserted therein and the relative terminal of a handle is fixed by a knob 40, by which the tube is perpendicularly hung down. Next, the tube/handle assembly parts are kept at a temperature suitable for removing all of the remaining impurities and generally, the temperature of the assembly parts is raised by passing the parts through the hot region of a furnace, by which the entire part of the tube is fired and thereafter the furnace is heated generally to a sintering temperature. The tube is then passed through the hot region and is returned by pulling up (ascending sintering). The handle front end and the tube around the same are deformed by the high temperature but the handle front end is applied with force and has a tendency to be deformed in the array symmetrically perpendicularly to the tube which maintains perpendicularity by the occurrence of the warpage. The deformation at the front end considerably lowers the induction of the warpage in the tube.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a silica-coated clad tube as a precursor of an optical fiber wherein processing accompanying a homogeneous gaseous reaction product and heating are promoted because concentration on a cold surface is controlled, which method is applicable to the heating of a sol-gel tube and other substrates. SOLUTION: Pipe-shaped muffle furnace 10 with an open end is provided with a tube 11 or other substrate and a cylindrical shield 12 for shielding heat and gas, and a door 13. The tube 11 in the furnace 10 which is closed with the door at the open end is heated and processed with a gas stream through a feed hole 14. The heat at the door is controlled with the shield 12, by which O-ring 16 is maintained to perfection. Other example shows that a counterdiffusion of both a process gas from the tube 11 and a concentratable material toward the door is controlled with the shield 12.

Abstract: The invention provides a process capable of heating sol-gel tubes, or other bodies, in a manner that both limits the amount of undesirable condensation on cooler surfaces and also promotes heating and treatment with gaseous reactants in a uniform manner. In one embodiment, the process involves the steps of providing a furnace comprising a tubular muffle having an opening at one end; placing tubes or other bodies into the muffle through the opening; placing within the muffle, just inside the muffle opening, a cylindrical heat and gas shield, e.g., a plug; sealing the muffle opening with a door; heating the tubes; and treating the tubes by directing the gases through a feed hole located in the door or elsewhere in the muffle. The heat-gas shield controls the amount of heat reaching the door, thereby maintaining the integrity of the o-ring. It is also possible in other embodiments for the shield to control the extent to which both process gases and condensable materials driven from the tubes are able to back diffuse toward the muffle door, thereby reducing or avoiding condensation of the materials on the door as well as undesirable reactions between the process gases and the o- ring seal.

Abstract: An improved technique for assembling and drawing fiber from preforms is provided. In one embodiment, the technique involves providing a core rod assembly comprising a core rod and a bushing attached at an end of the assembly. The core rod assembly is inserted into an unsintered overcladding tube, and secured to the tube such that the core rod assembly is suspended within. The overcladding tube and the core rod assembly are heated to sinter the overcladding tube and thereby form a preform assembly. During the heating step, the bushing comes into contact with the interior of the overcladding tube, and, because the bushing has a larger diameter than the core rod, an annular gap is maintained between the core rod assembly and the interior of the overcladding tube. It is then possible to attach a draw handle to the preform assembly, place the preform assembly into a draw tower, and draw fiber from the preform assembly by an overclad during draw technique.
