    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of producing an optical fiber strong against staining, and having microstructure and a reduced operation by workers. SOLUTION: This method of producing the microstructured optical fiber comprises a step wherein a cylindrical container and a plurality of elongated members extending to at least a part of the length of the cylindrical container are prepared, a process wherein the elongated members are hold at a predetermined space with respect to the container and at least a part of the container is filled with a sol including silica and the sol is changed to a gel, a process wherein the gel body having the plurality of the elongated members is formed and the gel body is separated from the elongated body or the elongated member is separated from the container, and a process wherein the gel body is dried, purified, and sintered and the microstructured optical fiber is pulled out from the sintered gel body.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a silica-coated clad tube as a precursor of an optical fiber wherein processing accompanying a homogeneous gaseous reaction product and heating are promoted because concentration on a cold surface is controlled, which method is applicable to the heating of a sol-gel tube and other substrates. SOLUTION: Pipe-shaped muffle furnace 10 with an open end is provided with a tube 11 or other substrate and a cylindrical shield 12 for shielding heat and gas, and a door 13. The tube 11 in the furnace 10 which is closed with the door at the open end is heated and processed with a gas stream through a feed hole 14. The heat at the door is controlled with the shield 12, by which O-ring 16 is maintained to perfection. Other example shows that a counterdiffusion of both a process gas from the tube 11 and a concentratable material toward the door is controlled with the shield 12.

    Abstract: It has been found that in sol-gel processes utilizing TMAH, it is possible to treat a trimethylamine (TRIMA)-containing solution with hydrogen peroxide to form trimethylamine oxide - (CH3)3N -O- (TRIMAO), a water soluble compound which is less volatile and less odorous than TRIMA, and which is capable of being sent to a standard wastewater treatment plant. The hydrogen peroxide is generally added to the TRIMA-containing solution in a H2O2:TRIMA ratio of at least 3:1, advantageously at least 10:1. Because of the resultant TRIMAO solution's ability to be sent to a standard wastewater treatment facility, improved productivity and lowered expense of the overall fiber fabrication process are obtained. The invention is also suitable for treatment of triethylamine.

    Abstract: The invention provides a process capable of heating sol-gel tubes, or other bodies, in a manner that both limits the amount of undesirable condensation on cooler surfaces and also promotes heating and treatment with gaseous reactants in a uniform manner. In one embodiment, the process involves the steps of providing a furnace comprising a tubular muffle having an opening at one end; placing tubes or other bodies into the muffle through the opening; placing within the muffle, just inside the muffle opening, a cylindrical heat and gas shield, e.g., a plug; sealing the muffle opening with a door; heating the tubes; and treating the tubes by directing the gases through a feed hole located in the door or elsewhere in the muffle. The heat-gas shield controls the amount of heat reaching the door, thereby maintaining the integrity of the o-ring. It is also possible in other embodiments for the shield to control the extent to which both process gases and condensable materials driven from the tubes are able to back diffuse toward the muffle door, thereby reducing or avoiding condensation of the materials on the door as well as undesirable reactions between the process gases and the o- ring seal.
