    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To build up an inexpensive radio frequency identification(RFID) network having one interrogator or over with a means having an RFID function, a sensor function, and a motion detection and sensor data analysis function. SOLUTION: A radio communication system has interrogators 103, 104 that generate and transmit a radio signal. The radio communication system includes one tag 105 (106, 107) or over. A backscatter modulator uses a sub carrier signal to modulate a reflected radio signal and to form a reflected modulation signal. The interrogator receives and demodulates the reflected modulation signal. Based on the characteristic of the demodulated signal, the interrogator discriminates identification information of the tags 105, 106, 107 and a relative speed of each tag with respect to the interrogator. The interrogator can discriminate whether or not there is a motion around the interrogator independently of the presence of a tag without the need for other motion detection system. Moreover, the characteristic of a tag motion such as a vibration frequency is discriminated based on the characteristic of the demodulation signal.

    Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a radio communication system includes an Interrogator for generating and transmitting a radio signal. One or more Tags contained within the radio communication system receive the radio signa l. ABackscatter Modulator modulates reflection of the r adio signal using a subcarrier signal, thereby forming a reflected modulated signal. The Interrogator recei ves and demodulates the reflected modulated signal. Based upon the characteristics o f the demodulated signal the Interrogator can determine the identity of the Tag, a nd the relative velocity of the Tag with respect to the Interrogator. The Interrog ator can also determine if motion exists in the vicinity of the Interrogator, even no Tag is present, without the need for a separate motion detection system. The charac teristics of the demodulated signal, can also be used to determine the characteristics of motion of the Tag, such as the vibrational frequency. Alternate embodiments allow the Interrogator to transmit a first information signal to one or more tags, specifying which Tags should respond using Backscatter Modulator means, so that the characteristics of only particular Tags can be determined. Further alternat e embodiments allow the Tag to input analog data, and perform analog to digita l conversion of that data. This data may be then transmitted to the Interroga tor using Modulated Backscatter. Alternately, this data may be used as input to calcul ations performed in the Tag in order to analyze the frequency characteristics of th e analog input. The Tag can also, based. upon the results of these calculations, iden tify an abnormal condition and notify the Interrogator of the existence of such a co ndition.

    Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a radio communications system is disclosed that can determine the location of an RFID Tag. The radi o communication system includes at least one Interrogator for generating and transmitting a modulated radio signal to one or more Tags. The Interrogator is at a known location, and is in motion with respect to the Tag at a known velocity . One or more Tags of the system receive and demodulate the modulated radio signal, w hichcontains a first information signal which specifies which Tag or Tags should respond using Backscatter Modulator means. The Tag generates a subcarrier signal, an d backscatter modulates the reflection of the radio signal using the subcarrie r signal, thereby forming a reflected signal. The Interrogator receives and demodulate s the reflected signal. The Interrogator then determines the Tag's relative direct ion from the location and velocity of the Interrogator, and from the Doppler shift of the subcarrier signal. More than one of such measurements allow the location of the Tag to be determined.

Further alternate embodiments allow the Tag to input analog data, and perform analog to digital conversion of that data. This data may be then transmitted to the Interrogator using Modulated Backscatter. Alternately, this data may be used as input to calculatio ns performed in the Tag in order to analyze the frequency characteristics of the an alog input. The Tag can also, based. upon the results of these calculations, identify an abnormal condition and notify the Interrogator of the existence of such a condit ion.
