    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow one and the same interrogator to serve a plurality of applications by using a modulated sub-carrier signal, so as to modulate a reflected continuous wave(CW) radio signal. SOLUTION: An antenna 301 of a tag 105 receives a down-link signal 204a, and a 1st modulation signal is demodulated directly to a base band at a detector/modulator 302. A demodulated signal 302 is amplified, and synchronization is recovered by a clock recovery circuit 304. A recover signal 304a is analyzed by a processor 305. The processor 305 generates other information signal 306, depending on a content of an information signal 200a, and the signal 306 is returned to an interrogator. The information signal 306 is fed to a modulator control circuit 307, to modulate a sub-carrier 308a by using the information signal 306. A modulation control circuit 307 outputs a modulated sub-carrier signal 311, the detector/modulator 302 modulates a CW radio signal of a down- link signal 202a, to generate a modulated back-scatter signal 301a.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently utilize a usable band, which is to be changed with the time of an RE channel, and to be flexibly adaptive to it by reprogramming and rearranging (reconfiguring) at least one programmable device. SOLUTION: A system performance measuring and optimizing (SPM/O) block 110 is arranged inside a reception chain 124. The SPM/O 110 monitors the performance of a channel 105, digital demodulator 106, channel decoder 107 and source decoder 108. Then, it is determined as needed which one of blocks 102-104 in a transmission chain 128 and which one of blocks 106-108 in the reception chain 124 are to be dynamically reconfigured. When reprogramming is required, the SPM/O 110 instructs the reprogramming of the programmable device to a programming logic 22.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the security and to reduce the cost of a communication system by transmitting the information at one or more data speeds by means of a modulation back scatter technique. SOLUTION: An application processor 101 communicates with the question units 103 and 104 via a LAN(local area network) 102. Every question unit communicates with one or plural tags 105 to 107. A receiving modulation radio signal modulator can recover a 1st information signal, and a 1st decision element supplies the output to designate at least the selected one of two alternate actions A and B in response to the 1st information signal. A 2nd information signal is produced in response to the output of the 1st decision element and has a data speed which is increased in the action A compared with the action B. Then the reflection of a receiving modulation radio signal is modulated by means of the 2nd information signal.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide design of a comparatively inexpensive tag for radio- frequency identification(RFID) system application, in which high sensitivity and a wide effective range are not so much of important. SOLUTION: RFID tag design using an inexpensive back scattering modulator is provided. The modulator is a simple CMOS gate 202 that is driven by a shift register 203, including a modulation signal. The CMOS gate is connected to an antenna 201 so as to modulate a reflectance of an antenna according to the modulation signal. In the 2nd embodiment, a tag is contained in a single CMOS integrated circuit, including all configuration elements required, to realize an inexpensive read-only RFID tag, except for the antenna.

SOLUTION: A radio communications system can operate in one of several modes which integrate in-building security, location determination, messaging, and data communications capabilities. The system has one or more interrogators for generating and transmitting a radio signal. One or more tags of the system receive the radio signal. A backscatter modulator modulates the reflection of the radio signal using subcarrier signal, thereby forming a reflected modulated signal. The interrogators receive and demodulate the reflected modulated signal. The system can also be used for other systems, such as electronic mail, voice mail, location determination and inventory management.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an MBS system which has a processing gain regarding MBS background noises by using a wide-band uplink signal and a narrow-band downlink signal. SOLUTION: An interrogator 103 receives a reflected and modulated signal by a receiving antenna 206, amplifies it by a low-noise amplifier 207, and demodulates the amplified signal to the intermediate frequency(IF) of a single subcarrier by using the homodyne detection of a mixer 208. An information signal 211 transmitted with the IF subcarrier is demodulated by a subcarrier demodulator 212, which sends an information signal 213 out to a processor 200 to determine message contents. Only a desired signal modulated with a pseudo-random noise code of a rate is compressed and transmitted to the processor 200. In this case, the chip rate of a pseudo-random signal is higher than the data rate of a data signal and the data rate is, for example, a bit rate or symbol rate.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide transmitting and receiving antennas which are small, light-weight and also inexpensive, and provide a beam width that is suitable for use. SOLUTION: This antenna system is suitable for an application in which a RFID tag passes near an interrogator. A single flat planar antenna 410 is used for transmission, and a multi-element flat planar antenna array 460 is used for receiving. In the multi-element flat planar antenna array, each element 420 to 450 is placed at intervals that are separated by 10.16cm for center to center interval and decides receiving beam width of narrow 30 degrees on a horizontal flat plane. A vertical receiving band width is far larger than 30 degrees and facilitates an interrogator in receiving signals at various heights.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To build up an inexpensive radio frequency identification(RFID) network having one interrogator or over with a means having an RFID function, a sensor function, and a motion detection and sensor data analysis function. SOLUTION: A radio communication system has interrogators 103, 104 that generate and transmit a radio signal. The radio communication system includes one tag 105 (106, 107) or over. A backscatter modulator uses a sub carrier signal to modulate a reflected radio signal and to form a reflected modulation signal. The interrogator receives and demodulates the reflected modulation signal. Based on the characteristic of the demodulated signal, the interrogator discriminates identification information of the tags 105, 106, 107 and a relative speed of each tag with respect to the interrogator. The interrogator can discriminate whether or not there is a motion around the interrogator independently of the presence of a tag without the need for other motion detection system. Moreover, the characteristic of a tag motion such as a vibration frequency is discriminated based on the characteristic of the demodulation signal.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To integrate passengers, baggages, cargoes, and containers by a single communication base without necessitating manual intervention at the time of reading data by providing an interrogator for transmitting a down-lank signal, and receiving a up-link signal, and a tag for receiving the down-link signal, and transmitting the up-link signal. SOLUTION: This system is provided with a radio frequency identifying system using a modulating back scatter, and a tag for transmitting data a various data rates is used. For example, a cargo container 810 having a container tag 820 is loaded through a door 840 of a cargo bay on an airplane 860. The container tag 820 is fixed to the cargo container 810, and the cargo container 810 can be identified when it is allowed to pass through a cargo handling facility, and the entrance or exit of the air plane or the like. An interrogator 103 at the upper part of a crane 850 reads an airplane tag 830, and communicates identification information indication which baggage, cargo, and container is loaded on the airplane 860, and the identification information of the door 840 of the cargo bay to a handling system.

The radio communication system is also used for the other systems, such as electronic mail, voice mail, position decision and inventory management.
