Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the access to fibers in a central part when optical fiber ribbons are divided by allowing the fibers selected among the plural color coded optical fibers to have the strength of adhesion varying between fiber coating layers and a matrix. SOLUTION: The individual optical fibers 21 to 24 and 26 to 29 are coated with the colored layers and are then cured, and arrayed in the prescribed positions of the ribbon and are sealed into a matrix material 18. The number of the optical fibers included in respective sub-units and the number of the sub-units by which the ribbon is divided are determined. The adhesive power between the matrix of the first and second adjacent fibers and the adhesive layers is increased, by which the optical fiber ribbon which can be divided to the plural sub-units is obtained. The colored layers of the respective fibers contain peeling agents. The amounts of the peeling agents of the first and second fibers are decreased. The amounts of the peeling agents of the first and second fibers are preferably specified to about 15 to 40% of the amounts of the remaining peeling agents.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and an apparatus in which the position and the size of an ink skip can be detected precisely by a method wherein a photodetector which receives light reflected from the outer surface is provided and a signal processing device which decides whether the photodetector detects a plurality of surface characteristics is provided. SOLUTION: In an apparatus, a light source, a lens system, a photodetector array 9, an amplifier 10, an analog-to-digital converter(ADC) 11, a computer 12 and a voice or vision indicator 13 are provided. The ACD 11 and the computer 12 constitute a processing device which processes a detection signal. The computer 12 generates a reference voltage on the basis of an optical fiber region in which a defect in an ink does not exist. A plurality of samples are obtained by the ADC 11, and their read-out values are averaged so as to be stored in a memory. On the basis of whether a digital signal received by the computer 12 from the ADC 11 is by a decided amount larger or smaller than the reference voltage, it is decided that a surface characteristic such as an ink skip is detected.
