Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Mach-Zehnder electrooptic modulator constitution which provides high-bit-rate throughput. SOLUTION: This Mach-Zehnder electrooptic modulator includes three regions. A 1st region has a couple of isolated waveguides and is equipped with a ground electrode 76 arranged on a 2nd waveguide 64 and an RF electrode (hot electrode) which is arranged on a 1st waveguide 66 and carries a modulated signal. A 2nd transition region is arranged right behind the 1st region. An electrode structure moves to the 2nd region, the RF electrode 72 is arranged over the 2nd waveguide 64 nearby the exit point of the 2nd region, and the ground electrode 78 is arranged on the 1st waveguide 66. A 3rd region is arranged behind the 2nd region. The RF electrode 72 is held on the 2nd waveguide 64 and the ground electrode 78 is held on the 1st waveguide 66.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To respectively independently adjust both modulations by respectively independently adjusting the phase modulation and the polarity modulation and adopting a desired combination for the polarity modulation free from chirps and the phase modulation free from chirps. SOLUTION: Phase modulators 115, 120 are driven by the voltages of sinusoidal waveforms of V1 cos(Ωt+ϕ) and V2 cos(Ωt). Here, Ω/2π is a modulation frequency and ϕ is an adjustable phase. The phase delay quantities ϕ1 (t) and ϕ2 (t) induced by these separate voltages are respectively equal to Δϕ1 cos(Ωt+ϕ) and Δϕ2 cos(Ωt). The high-speed polarity scrambler 10 is capable of forming the combination of the phase delay difference ϕ(t) and common phase modulation Ψ(t) when the two independent phase modulators 115, 125 are respectively driven by the voltages of the sinusoidal waveforms from this Jones vector equation. The adjustment of relative driving phase ϕ and peak phase fluctuations Δϕ1 and Δϕ2 via driving voltages amplitude V1 , V2 is merely necessitated.

Abstract: Two separate electrooptic phase modulators are used in a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer to vary the absolute and relative optical phases of two orthogonally polarized modes of an input signal independently of each other. A conventional Y-branch splitter on lithium niobate splits the input signal equally into the two waveguide phase modulators and an external polarization splitter recombines the two phase modulated signals in orthogonal polarization states. The polarization in the interferometer is maintained by connecting the outputs of the two phase modulators to polarization maintaining fibers. An alternate embodiment of the present invention uses an additional 3-dB directional coupler to mix the two phase modulated signals before they are combined in orthogonal polarization states.

Abstract: A Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator is formed that exhibits significant ly reduced chirp by utilizing an RF electrode that covers a first waveguide arm in a first region of the modulator and covers the second, remaining waveguide arm in a third region of the modulator (with a second, intermediate region used as a transition area for the electrode). Moving the electrode from one waveguide to the other allows for the chirp created in the third region to essentially "null out" the chirp that accumulated along the first region. Modulation of the optical signal is maintained in th e presence of the "electrode switching" by inverting the domain of the optical substrate material in the third region of the modulator.
