    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide design of a comparatively inexpensive tag for radio- frequency identification(RFID) system application, in which high sensitivity and a wide effective range are not so much of important. SOLUTION: RFID tag design using an inexpensive back scattering modulator is provided. The modulator is a simple CMOS gate 202 that is driven by a shift register 203, including a modulation signal. The CMOS gate is connected to an antenna 201 so as to modulate a reflectance of an antenna according to the modulation signal. In the 2nd embodiment, a tag is contained in a single CMOS integrated circuit, including all configuration elements required, to realize an inexpensive read-only RFID tag, except for the antenna.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide transmitting and receiving antennas which are small, light-weight and also inexpensive, and provide a beam width that is suitable for use. SOLUTION: This antenna system is suitable for an application in which a RFID tag passes near an interrogator. A single flat planar antenna 410 is used for transmission, and a multi-element flat planar antenna array 460 is used for receiving. In the multi-element flat planar antenna array, each element 420 to 450 is placed at intervals that are separated by 10.16cm for center to center interval and decides receiving beam width of narrow 30 degrees on a horizontal flat plane. A vertical receiving band width is far larger than 30 degrees and facilitates an interrogator in receiving signals at various heights.

    Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a general antenna system is disclosed suitable for applications in which an RFID Tag passes by an Interr ogator. We then disclose a specific antenna design that uses a single planar antenna fortransmit and a multi-element planar antenna array fo r receive. The multi-elementplanar antenna array is spaced such that each of the planar elements is four inches apart, center-to-center, thus defining a narrow 30.degree. receive beamwidth in the horizontal plane. The vertical receive bandwidth is much greater than 30.deg ree., facilitating the Interrogator receiving signals at a variety of elevations. Furthermore, a multi-way microstrip combiner is used to sum the signals received from each of the pla nar antenna. To block interference from the transmit antenna and to improve rec eivesensitivity, this multi-way microstrip combiner is s hielded using, in one embodiment, copper tape along its edges. In a specific embodiment, a four element receiv e antenna design is disclosed.
