    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide system introduction with flexibility by raising and expanding an architecture stepwise while reutilizing many of existing voice communication infra as they are at the time replacing a cellular communication system based on channels/packets with a system capable of handling data. SOLUTION: The introduction is desirably performed through four stages. In a first stage, a conventional cellular exchanging device 10 is connected to a radio base station 12 and a public exchange telephone network and achieves a standard digital exchange function and a voice call control processor 28 performs call control and charge management. Also, a data digital cellular (data DC) exchanging device 46 is connected to the public exchange telephone network and a public exchange packet data network and achieves an ATM exchange function and a data call control processor 48 performs the call control and the charge management. The exchanging devices 10 and 46 are connected by a converter 66 front a channel packet to ATM and the mutual exchange connection of a call is performed. In a second stage, the processors 28 and 48 are integrated. In a third stage, the respective radio base stations are unitarily controlled and managed under an ATM exchange basic structure 50.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a cellular communication system that is comprised of a plurality of radio ports that communicate over an air interface with a plurality of terminal devices, where the radio ports have asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) interfaces. A cellular switch is provided having circuit-switching fabric connected to a public switched telephone network (PSTN). A digital cellular switch (DCS) is provided which has ATM fabric, radio link protocol processors, and vocoders, where the vocoders are connected to the PSTN, and where the ATM fabric is connected to the radio ports by ATM virtual links. One or more standard hardware platforms implement ATM transport that perform a plurality of call control functions including the handling of voice and data calls from/to the radio ports. A network interworking module interfaces the DCS to a communications network. A voice call is set-up by the plurality of functions implemented on the standard hardware platforms, so that a voice communication path is established from the terminal device to the PSTN, which includes the air interface and one or more of the radio ports and ATM virtual links, the ATM fabric, and one of the vocoders. A data call is set-up by the plurality of functions implemented on the standard hardware platforms, so that a data communication path is established from the terminal device to the communications network, which includes the air interface and one or more of the radio ports and ATM virtual links, the ATM fabric, one of said radio protocol processors, and the network interworking module.

One or more standard hardware platforms implement ATM transport that perform a plurality of call control functions including the handling of data calls from/to the base stations and radio ports. A network interworking module interfaces the DCS toa communications network.
