Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate a signal transmitted by a remote terminal whose strength is below a signal threshold by discriminating whether or not the strength of the received signal is larger than or equal to a 1st power threshold, allowing a receiver section to increase the signal strength by a prescribed amount and to re-transmit the signal with the enhanced power. SOLUTION: When the strength of a original signal transmitted by a remote terminal does not exceed a DTHRESHI (detection threshold level), a base station discriminates whether or not the signal exceeds a PTHRESHI (power threshold level). In the case that the strength of the received original signal exceeds the PTHRESHI, the base station transmits a PTHRESHI excess message to the remote terminal. Upon receipt of the message from a receiver section 406, the remote terminal uses a processor 402 to give a control signal to a transmitter section 408 to increase the transmission power level of the signal, and retransmits an access request signal to the base station.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and a system for providing a short random access channel (RACH) frame in order to decrease the delay. SOLUTION: An enhanced RACH access burst configuration and frame structure are provided. That is, a method and a system are provided to support a plurality of access burst lengths in a UMTS access channel structure. Preferably two access burst lengths of 5 ms and 10 ms are supported. The configuration above is effective to an application desiring a short access delay real time traffic of voice and other form. This method and the system are to support a plurality of frame sizes and can reduce an access delay furthermore by allowing a physical layer of UMTS to support a plurality of frame sizes. In the case that the RACH is used for a UMTS short message service, an access burst signal sent from a remote terminal to the RACH may be access request or a data packet.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assign a different chip delay to each priority class by selecting a back-off delay among different back-off delays relating respectively to a access priority class established in advance and transmitting a new access request signal through a selected logic access channel to a base station. SOLUTION: A remote terminal receives and stores an access priority system parameter that is multiple addressed to a base station. The terminal decides whether or not a new class request is required for reception of a packet to be sent and selects a logical access channel as required. The terminal selects random chip delay from a distribution on the basis of a required priority class or a priority class belonging to the terminal and transmits an access request according to the selected chip delay on a selected logical access channel. Then the terminal decides whether or not the access request is received by the base station.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable access priority control by assigning an access priority attribute having the priority higher than the priority concerning an access priority attribute, which is assigned to an access request signal, to a following access request signal when the access request signal is not received. SOLUTION: When a terminal judges an access request is not received by a base station, a function called no-tx is incremented just for '1'. Then, no-tx is compared with Ki (the maximum number of retransmission retry of class (i)). Then, the greater Ki (namely Ki>=Ki+1) is assigned to the class of higher priority and the retry of retransmission is performed often. When the maximum value of retransmission is not reached, a back-off process is executed. Then, a remote terminal waits the next usable access slot and repeats the process. Thus, when the priority of transmission is high, since the selection is performed from the bottom random chip delay distribution, the possibility to make the request successful is improved.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved RACH access burst arrangement and frame structure. That is, the invention provides methods and apparatus for supporting more than one access burst length in the UMTS access channel structure. Preferably, two access burst lengths are supported, e.g., 5 ms and 10 ms. Such an arrangement is advantageous in applications where it is beneficial to have fast access latency such as, for example, voice or other forms of real-time traffic. Also, the invention provides methods and apparatus for supporting multiple frame sizes. It is to be appreciated that further enhancement to access latency can be obtained by having the UMTS physical layer support multiple frame sizes. The access burst signal transmitted by a remote terminal over the RACH may be an access request or data packets in the case where the RACH is being utilized for UMTS short message services.
