Abstract:
A self-contained apparatus (10) for converting an audio signal from a microphone (16) into a baseband transmit signal suitable for transmitting with an analog FM transmitter. The self contained apparatus can also decode baseband receive signals from a direct speaker audio output (31) of an analog FM receiver. The apparatus for translating an audio signal from a microphone (16) into a baseband transmit signal includes an analog to digital converter (102) for digitizing a received analog signal from a microphone (16) and a pre-modulation processor (108) for processing the digitized signal, wherein a sideband spectrum of the digitized signal is shifted away from subaudible frequencies by a predetermined amount to generate the baseband signal.
Abstract:
A method and system is provided for improving bit error rate (BER) performance in delay spread fading conditions, such as the fading associated with simulcast systems. BER is improved through novel symbol synchronization that comprises oversampling an input signal (602A, 602B) and filtering the samples to determine a composite symbol sample point that converges toward the center (510, 514, 516) of the signal's effective eye pattern. The composite symbol sample point may be an average of previous composite symbol sample points and an instantaneous sample point (614) determined based on samples from a synchronization field (748, 796) of the signal. The updated composite symbol sample point may be utilized for future sampling of the incoming signal.
