Abstract: An electric discharge lamp having an excellent color rendition with a color acceptability higher than 1.0, a relatively high luminous efficacy and a good life performance, is provided, in a high pressure metal vapor lamp using a polycrystalline alumina ceramic tubing as the arc tube envelope within which sodium as a metal for producing radiant emission, mercury or cadmium as a buffer gas and xenon as a starting inert gas are contained, by controlling such quantities which are variable in the design of the high pressure metal vapor discharge lamp as the lamp wattage W in watts, an increased internal diameter of the arc tube envelope of the lamp d in millimeters, the interelectrode gap length L in millimeters and a lowered average potential gradient of the arc tube E in volts per centimeter in such a manner that they may satisfy the relations:

Abstract: A plurality of scanning electrodes and a plurality of sustaining electrodes parallel to each other are located on an inner face of a first glass substrate. Each of the scanning electrodes and each of the sustaining electrodes form a pair. A dielectric layer and a protection layer are formed on the first glass substrate in this order, covering the electrodes. A plurality of data electrodes perpendicular to the scanning electrodes and the sustaining electrodes are located on an inner face of a second glass substrate which is located opposed to the first glass substrate with a discharge space interposed therebetween. In an AC-type PDP having such a structure, at least one of the plurality of scanning electrodes and the plurality of sustaining electrodes are divided into a plurality of groups, and pulses having different phases are applied to the electrodes in different groups, thereby causing sustaining discharge. The scanning electrodes and the sustaining electrodes may be comb-like with teeth. The comb-like scanning electrodes and the comb-like sustaining electrodes are opposed to each other with a small gap interposed therebetween in the manner that the teeth thereof are in engagement with each other. In such a case, the data electrodes are located opposed to and in a longitudinal direction of the teeth of the scanning electrodes.

Abstract: A high-pressure metal-vapor discharge tube having improved characteristics is disclosed. The tube has an alumina hollow discharge enclosure tube member, the ends of which are sealed by alumina end disks. The end disks have central apertures through which electrode lead in wires or rods extend into the discharge enclosure. The lead in wires or rods are made of a material which is resistant to the corrosive effects of metal halide. The hollow discharge enclosure tube member has walls which are thicker at the two ends than in the intermediate region of the tube member. Preferably, the ends are more than twice as thick as the central walls. This results in a stronger seal between the alumina end disks and the tube member, thus not only avoiding the risk of breakage when sealing the tube member and manufacturing defects such as a defective seal, but also ensuring longer life of the lamp.

Abstract: 1280735 Metal vapour lamps MATSUSHITA ELECTRONICS CORP 25 Aug 1970 [29 Aug 1969] 40870/70 Heading H1D A high pressure metal vapour discharge lamp comprises a sealed transparent polycrystalline high density ceramic tubular enclosure 1 (e.g. alumina, beryllia, magnesia) containing a rare gas (e.g. Xe), Hg, and one or more alkali metals (e.g. Na) to form a saturated vapour pressure, and metal layers 5 in contact with the outer wall at each end to conduct heat from the hotter to the cooler parts. The layer 5 is preferably a metal of high m.p., high thermal conductivity and low vapour pressure and may be Ti, Y, Rh, Ru, Mo, Nb, Ta, W, Pt, Ir, Re or Os and may be foil such as 0À02 mm. thick Ta, formed by chemical or vapour deposition, or by sputtering. Ceramic end discs 2 may be replaced by metal end caps. The metal layers preferably do not extend beyond 5 mm. from the front tip of electrodes 6. In sputtering, the central part of the tube is covered with an insulator such as porcelain supporting a W anode, and the end parts are wound with metal foil. For chemical deposition, the end parts may be heated to 600 to 700 C. and contacted with a mixed gas of molybdenum pentachloride and hydrogen. Ceramic cement seals the enclosure, discs 2 and leadin metal tubes 3. Discs 2 are preferably the same material as the enclosure, but may be other ceramics with high thermal expansion coefficient approximating that high m.p. tubes 3 of Nb, Ta or Mo for example. Alkali vapour pressures may be 300 to 1000 torr and the coolest and highest tube temperatures may be 650 to 800 C. and 1200 C. respectively (e.g. Fig. 2, not shown).

The respective discharge rooms overlap the through-hole at one end in the longitudinal direction thereof. A part of the filaments is exposed to the discharge room via the through-hole so as to act as a cathode. In addition, an anode (17) exists respectively at the other end of the respective discharge rooms. In this manner, a luminescent panel for color video display, with a plurality of picture elements arranged in a matrix with a narrowed-pitch and a high density, is provided.
