Abstract: 1,188,764. Sewing machines. MEFINA S.A. 19 Nov., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 54827/68. Heading D1G. A thread take-up arrangement comprises an oscillatory lever having one end adapted to draw the thread upwards after the formation of a stitch, and an elongated cover covering said one end over its entire movement and having a substantially U-shaped cross-section with two slits being oppositely located in lateral walls, characterised in that the slits join in the upper end of the cover to permit the thread to be placed in the slits and to freely contact an upper surface of said lever end. As shown, the crank 10, carrying a crank pin actuating the pitman 5 driving the needle bar 7, has a second crank pin 11 to which is pivoted a sleeve 37 slidably receiving a rod 38 rigid with the thread take-up lever 12. One end of the latter is pivoted at 39 to the machine frame, and the other end is hook-shaped to receive the thread, and oscillates within a cover 30 formed at its opposed sides with thread-passing slits 31 which merge into an upper slit (32) partly closed by a tongue 36. The lever end is perforated to receive either a plastics pin or a felt plug, the ends of which engage the opposed surfaces of cover 30 to guide the lever therein and to prevent passage of the thread 18 beneath said end. The latter may, alternatively, be provided with a thread-guiding eyelet. In a modification, the inner end of lever 12 is pivoted on pin 11, and lever 12 is pivoted intermediately to a swinging link.

Abstract: 1,257,133. Upper thread tensioner. MEFINA S.A. 25 Nov., 1969 [6 Dec., 1968], No. 57510/69. Heading D1G. An adjustable tensioning device in a sewing machine comprises a spindle 6 carrying at least two tension discs 5 gripping the upper thread, a spring 8 acting indirectly on the spindle to urge the discs together, a knurled adjusting knob 9 controlling a cam 11 which engages a first lever 14, and a second lever 23 engaging both the spring and the spindle. As shown, both levers are pivoted side by side on the common spindle 15. The lever 14 is connected to spring 8 at one end thereof by an adjustable nut and bolt 20, the end of lever 23 remote from its pivot has a fork engaging a slot in spindle 6. A side projection 27 on lever 23 engages below spring 8. The cam 11 has notches 12 which cooperate with the free end 13 of lever 14 to define a number of tension adjusting positions, the knob 9 having an appropriate scale. A pin (29, Fig. 3 not shown) engages slots (28) in the discs 5 to prevent their rotation. The presser foot lifting lever 56 carries a pivoted rod 58 which engages lever 23 at 61 to release the thread tension when the presser foot is raised. In modifications the levers 14, 23 may be disposed in super position, may have separate pivots and the knob and cam may be disposed horizontally. When two upper threads are employed in the machine the threads are guided to pass round the tensioner in opposite directions.
