Abstract: A process for the preparation of peroxides by condensation reaction of a tertiary organic hydroperoxide with a tertiary alcohol, which is characterized in that zinc chloride is present as a catalyst in an amount of at least 1 % by weight based on the tertiary alcohol, is disclosed. This process can be advantageously applied to continuous manufacture of peroxides, and according to this process, peroxides can be obtained in high yields.

Abstract: A process for the continuous production of an aromatic carboxylic acid by oxidising an alkyl aromatic compound in the liquid phase with an oxygen-containing gas in a reactor, in the presence of a metal compound and/or a bromine-containing compound, which comprises recirculating a part of the reaction gas delivered from the reactor and freed from the condensing components by returning it to the gas region in the reactor. This process produces aromatic carboxylic acids of high quality, while reducing or eliminating foaming occurring on the liquid surface in the reactor.

Abstract: A triphenol type compound represented by the following formula: wherein R₁ , R₂ , R₃ , R₄ , R₅ and R₆ independently represent hydrogen, a halogen, a C₁-C₅ alkyl group or a C₁-C₅ alkoxy group.The triphenol type compound can be used, as a branching agent, for the production of a polycarbonate comprising (A) a carbonic acid component unit, (B) a divalent phenol component unit, and (C) a triphenol type compound component unit derived from the above-mentioned triphenol type compound. The triphenol type compound unit (C) is used in an amount 0. 0.01 to 10 mole%, based on the divalent phenol component unit (B) and the intrinsic viscosity [η], determined at 25°C in methylene chloride, of the polycarbonate is 0.4 to 1.0 dl/g and the glass transition temperature (Tg), determined by a differential scanning type calorimeter is 150°C to 300°C.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of purifying an aqueous solution of m-aminophenol containing m-phenylenediamine as impurities, by extracting m-phenylenediamine from the aqueous solution with a halogenated hydrocarbon. Also disclosed is an improvement in a process of producing m-aminophenol comprising: reacting resorcinol with ammonia in water in the presence of a water soluble amination catalyst at elevated temperatures in a reaction vessel, and then separating m-aminophenol from the resultant reaction mixture. The improved process employes the above-mentioned purification method and comprises: (a) a step of removing unreacted ammonia from the reaction mixture and then crystallizing crude m-aminophenol from the reaction mixture; (b) a step of separating the crude m-aminophenol from the reaction mixture; (c) a step of adding a halogenated hydrocarbon to the resulting mother liquor to extract m-phenylenediamine as byproducts into the halogenated hydrocarbon, separating an aqueous phase from an organic phase, and recycling the aqueous phase to the reaction vessel; and (d) a step of distilling the crude m-aminophenol to provide high purity m-aminophenol.
