    Abstract: Crude terephthalic acid, as obtained by the oxidation of a p-dialkylbenzene and containing 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and other impurities, is purified by subjecting a high temperature aqueous solution of the crude terephthalic acid to oxidation under an oxygen-containing gas, at a feed rate of 0.4-10 moles oxygen per mole of the 4-carboxybenzaldehyde, followed by treatment with hydrogen.

    Abstract: A triphenol type compound represented by the following formula: wherein R₁ , R₂ , R₃ , R₄ , R₅ and R₆ independently represent hydrogen, a halogen, a C₁-C₅ alkyl group or a C₁-C₅ alkoxy group.The triphenol type compound can be used, as a branching agent, for the production of a polycarbonate comprising (A) a carbonic acid component unit, (B) a divalent phenol component unit, and (C) a triphenol type compound component unit derived from the above-mentioned triphenol type compound. The triphenol type compound unit (C) is used in an amount 0. 0.01 to 10 mole%, based on the divalent phenol component unit (B) and the intrinsic viscosity [η], determined at 25°C in methylene chloride, of the polycarbonate is 0.4 to 1.0 dl/g and the glass transition temperature (Tg), determined by a differential scanning type calorimeter is 150°C to 300°C.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method of purifying an aqueous solution of m-aminophenol containing m-phenylenediamine as impurities, by extracting m-phenylenediamine from the aqueous solution with a halogenated hydrocarbon. Also disclosed is an improvement in a process of producing m-aminophenol comprising: reacting resorcinol with ammonia in water in the presence of a water soluble amination catalyst at elevated temperatures in a reaction vessel, and then separating m-aminophenol from the resultant reaction mixture. The improved process employes the above-mentioned purification method and comprises: (a) a step of removing unreacted ammonia from the reaction mixture and then crystallizing crude m-aminophenol from the reaction mixture; (b) a step of separating the crude m-aminophenol from the reaction mixture; (c) a step of adding a halogenated hydrocarbon to the resulting mother liquor to extract m-phenylenediamine as byproducts into the halogenated hydrocarbon, separating an aqueous phase from an organic phase, and recycling the aqueous phase to the reaction vessel; and (d) a step of distilling the crude m-aminophenol to provide high purity m-aminophenol.
