Handoff from a Code-Division, Multiple Access (CDMA) protocol to an Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) protocol occurs by comparing a remote unit's (405) phase shift measurement to a threshold (503) and determining a reference CDMA base station (401) from an active set of CDMA base stations (515). Next, corrected phase shifts are calculated for each CDMA base station in the active set (521) and the remote unit (405) is handed off to an AMPS base station (109) underlying the CDMA coverage area (126) having the smallest corrected phase shift (525).

A controller (118) controls functions related specifically to radiotelephone signalling in a communication system. The controller (118) is physically dislocated from a switch (112) which performs all necessary routing of voice information from radiotelephone system-to-radiotelephone system and radiotelephone system-to-public switched telephone system (PSTN, 100). The controller (118) interfaces the switch (112) via an ISDN-type connection, essentially accessing the switch (112) transparently. This transparent access allows for common, generic switches (Class 5 switches for example) having predetermined user features such as Call Waiting, 3-Way Calling, etc. to be employed. Users of the radiotelephone system (125), via radiotelephone signalling processing by the controller (118), can access and utilize the predetermined features of the switch (112) as required.

A base station (105) comprises a notification processor (117) to transmit notification information of calls of a call service to remote terminals. The call service can be a GSM Voice Group Call Service (VGCS). The notification processor (117) comprises a BCCH processor (303) which notifies active calls for the call service to remote terminals in a first set of allocated radio blocks (201, 203) on a broadcast channel. A VGCS processor (307) determines that a new call is initialised, and in response the notification processor (117) replaces a notification for an existing call with a notification for the new call in at least one radio block of the first set of allocated radio blocks (201, 203).
