    Abstract: A method for registration of a portable unit that may be utilized in a communication system that comprises a network controller, having a data base for storing portable identification numbers, a base station, and a portable unit, wherein a subscriber communicates to the network controller a first information set which comprises subscriber qualifying information, the portable identification number, and a key code that has been entered into the portable, and wherein the subscriber has entered a link identification number for over-the-air registration into a memory within the portable unit. The registration method comprises the following steps. The portable unit sends the base station a request for registration. The request for registration comprises the link identification number for over-the-air registration and the portable identification number. The base station receives the request for registration from the portable unit, and sends to the network controller a notice of the request for registration and the portable identification number. The network controller receives the notice of the request for registration from the base station, and determines whether the portable identification number is in the network controller data base, and whether the subscriber has been approved for registration. The network controller then sends to the portable unit, through the base station, a registration information signal if the network controller determines that the portable identification number for over-the-air registration is in the network controller data base, and that the subscriber has been approved for registration, the registration information signal comprising an encrypted secret subscriber identification number that has been encrypted with the key code, and an unencrypted link identification number for base station access.

    Abstract: A paging system includes a transmitter for transmitting a carrier frequency signal modulated by subaudible tone signals in response to audible tone signals coupled to the transmitter from a remote point. An encoder at the remote point develops the audible tone signals which are coupled to the transmitter over standard telephone channels. At the transmitter, a circuit converts the audible tone signals to first square wave signals having the same frequency as the audible tone signals. A divider circuit divides the first square wave signals by a particular number to develop second square wave signals having the same frequency as the desired subaudible tone signals. The second square wave signals are coupled to a low pass filter which attenuates all frequencies above the subaudible tone signal frequencies and develops a sine wave having the desired subaudible tone frequency.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus whereby a communication unit (10) transmits a communication channel request and the nearest base site (12) makes the communication channel grant or allocation. A base site receives the channel request signal, measures the received signal strength (RSSI) level of the received signal, and if that level is above a threshold level, a communication channel is allocated to the requesting communication unit, thus establishing a communication link. If the channel request signal does not have an RSSI level above the threshold, the base site delays the grant of a communication channel for a period inversely proportional to the measured RSSI level to allow other base sites the opportunity to grant a communication channel to the requesting communication unit. If the base site determines that another base site has granted a communication channel to the requesting communication unit, the allocation process is stopped, and the base site continues scanning for channel request signals.
