Abstract: A signalling and control protocol is provided wherein each subscriber unit (106) operating with a communication system (100) must transmit a request (200, 200 min or 200 sec ) to communicate to a central station. If a communication channel is available, the central station returns a channel grant (210), which includes a time code representing a time duration during which the requesting subscriber may communicate. After receiving the channel grant (210), the subscriber unit may communicate for a time interval not exceeding the time duration, and, immediately prior to the expiration of the time duration, the subscriber unit may itself provide a warning tone indicating the impending loss of the communication channel. Conversely, if a communication channel is not available, the central station provides a busy message (216), which includes a code (218) representing the requesting subscriber unit's position is a call request queue.

Abstract: A method and apparatus whereby a communication unit (10) transmits a communication channel request and the nearest base site (12) makes the communication channel grant or allocation. A base site receives the channel request signal, measures the received signal strength (RSSI) level of the received signal, and if that level is above a threshold level, a communication channel is allocated to the requesting communication unit, thus establishing a communication link. If the channel request signal does not have an RSSI level above the threshold, the base site delays the grant of a communication channel for a period inversely proportional to the measured RSSI level to allow other base sites the opportunity to grant a communication channel to the requesting communication unit. If the base site determines that another base site has granted a communication channel to the requesting communication unit, the allocation process is stopped, and the base site continues scanning for channel request signals.

Abstract: An improved duplex time division multiplexed (TDM) communication system is provided while conserving spectrum and efficiency. To accommodate two voice signals on one channel, the time allocated in a channel for brief listener voice acknowledgements (92) is short; the time allocated for talker transmissions (88) is long. Moreover, the coding rate for the listener is slower than for the talker. The slot allocation can be switched whereby whoever is the dominant talker will maintain the longer slot (98).

Abstract: A radio communication system includes a base station (107, 109, 104, 105) and a plurality of remote units (202, 203, 210, 204) that can be operated in one of several modes. In the Message Storage mode, a caller is given the option to store a voice or numeric message for later transmission to the called remote unit. If caller enters an Override code, however, the system attempts to establish voice communication between the caller and the called remote unit. In the Call Screening mode, the caller's message is stored in the base station and, simultaneously, forwarded to the called remote unit. During reception of the message, the called remote unit can ''pickup'' the call and begin normal voice communications with the caller.

Abstract: A method for re-establishing a communication link that has been lost between a portable unit (406) and a fixed unit or base station (402) provides for a way of quickly re-establishing the lost communication link, on the previously used RF channel. The method is begun by transmitting a link re-establishment code word (900) using MUX 1 after determining that synchronization has been lost (502) for a predetermined period of time (504). This is followed by automatically switching the portable unit (406) from MUX 1 to MUX 3 communication protocol. Followed by re-establishing communication (re-establish synchronization) between the portable (406) and base station (402) in MUX 3 and switching the two communication devices (402 and 406) back to MUX 1 after the communication link has been re-established. The same steps can be followed by base site (402) if it had been the first to detect loss of the communication link.
