    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain improved demodulation for a spread spectrum communication signal including quick and accurate detection of a power control bit in a spread spectrum system. SOLUTION: A receiver circuit 400 receives a spread spectrum communication signal such as a DS-CDMA signal and conducts inverse spread processing and decoding. A channel phase and a channel gain for a communication channel are estimated from a pilot symbol of a pilot channel. The estimated value is provide to a demodulator 422 to demodulate a symbol of a traffic channel. Furthermore, a channel phase and a channel gain for a power control identifier are estimated from a pilot symbol. The estimated value is provided to a demodulator 424 to demodulate the power control identifier. The traffic channel symbol is delayed by a prescribed time in a delay element 420 before the demodulation. The power control identifier is delayed at a short delay element 418 or not delayed at all before demodulation.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce multi-path interference distortion by time-multiplexing a user message with a different message, inserting different delay to a reception data path again and compensating inter-symbol interference. SOLUTION: A TDMA controller 140 time-multiplexes the respective user messages with the other user message and generates TDMA signals. The TDMA signals 145 are impressed to a transmitter 150 and the TDMA signals 145 are received in an antenna 210 and supplied to a receiver 220. Then, they are impressed to a data butter 230 and the TDMA controller 240. Then, in order to compensate distortion in reception signals by inter-code interference and/or Rayleigh phasing, an equalizer 250 uses information obtained from an equalizer synchronization word, performs the continuous detailed measurement of multi- path characteristics and equalizes (uniformizes) the reception signals corresponding to the characteristics.

    Abstract: There is provided a method of digital Automatic Gain Control (AGC) in areceiver having limited dynamic range, particularly for discontinuous signals. The method comprises detecting the level of a received and AGC'd discontinuous signal, comparing the level of the AGC'd signal relative to the dynamic range of the receiver, and adjusting the AGC to establish a desired relationship between the AGC'd signal and the dynamic range limitation. There is also provided a method of handoff in a TDMA cellular-type transmission system utilizing this method of AGC. The method for Automatic Gain Control (AGC) of discontinuous signals in a receiver having limited dynamic range is further characterized by: digitizing a received and AGC'd discontinuous signal and converting the digitized samples to a power sample to sense the power of and detect the level of the signal, comparing the level of the AGC'd signal relative to the dynamic range of the receiver; and coarsely-adjusting by either progressively attenuating the signal until it falls within the dynamic range of the receiver or by progressively gain-amplifying the signal until it falls within the limited dynamic range of the receiver and finely-adjusting the AGC of the received signal until optimum use of the full (albeit limited) dynamic range of the signal processing stages is about 6-12 dB below maximum sensitivity to establish a desired relationship between the AGC'd signal and the dynamic range limitation.
