Abstract: The dual mode cellular network has two communication systems with different frame structures and traffic channel protocols. Only one of the protocols supports a forward error correction coding.Preferably the protocol which supports forward error correction coding also supports interleaving, or a combination of a code division, a time division multiple access method and maximum ratio combining diversity. The other one supports a time division multiple access method and switched antenna diversity.

Abstract: A dual mode radio communication unit (102, 104) for a digital communication system is provided having an error controller including an error detection encoder (111) and a forward error correction encoder (112) which encode an input information signal into an error protected data bit stream. In addition, the communication unit includes a mode selector which enables either the error detection encoder or the forward error correction encoder used with a particular mode of operation of the communication unit. Further, a corresponding dual mode radio communication unit is provided having an error controller for generating estimated information signal samples according to a group of algorithms consisting of either an error detection algorithm (261) or an error correction algorithm (202). In addition, the corresponding communication unit includes a mode selector (141) for receiving a signal according to a particular one of the group of algorithms which is associated with a particular mode of operation of the corresponding communication unit.

Abstract: The signalling channel is divided into two blocks of line separated by N/2 line blocks in the N line blocks multiplexed in the TDMA frame. The first block contains synchronisation information and the second block contains information on the jump sequence. Access is just gained on one carrier, among a number, to which the signalling channel and many voice channels are jumped. When the signalling frequency is changed, synchronisation is obtained and information on the jump sequence is obtained. The signalling channel has sub-channels for signal broadcast, synchronisation, personal calling, short messages, acceptance of access and broadcast data. USE/ADVANTAGE - Mobile assisted hand-over in cellular communications. Communication quality maintained at cell boundary, simpler configuration. Possible lower cost version for slower operation.
