Abstract: A method and a system for calibrating at least one antenna (1,1-1,3. 1,j). At least a first antenna (1,4) within a first antenna array (102) can be selected as a primary reference antenna. At least one antenna (4,3) that is not within the first antenna array can be selected as a secondary reference antenna. At least a first signal propagation characteristic (122) can be measured based on at least one signal wirelessly communicated between the primary reference antenna and the secondary reference antenna. At least a second signal propagation characteristic (118) can be measured based on at least one signal wirelessly communicated between the secondary reference antenna and at least a second antenna (1,2) within the first antenna array. Abstract: The adaptive bidirectional equalization process of the present invention first determines the point of lowest signal quality for the time slot being processed. Detection is then performed on the time slot in both directions until the processing meets at the point of lowest signal quality. This process reduces the bit error rate as compared to performing standard equalization on the time slot.

Abstract: In a communications device, two coherent detection algorithms (102 and 103), one of which has a decision feedback equalizer (103), and a detector selection algorithm (104) are used to dynamically select a detector depending on whether delay spread distortion is present. First the correlation of the detector without the equalizer (102) is measured. If this correlation is greater than a predetermined threshold, the data from that detector (102) is used by the communications device. If the correlation is less than the threshold, the correlation of the detector with the equalizer (103) is measured. If this is less than the correlation of the detector without the equalizer (102), the data from the detector without the equalizer (102) is used, otherwise the data is taken from the equalizer (103). In any case, if the detector without the equalizer is used, the detector with the equalizer is turned off.

The base communications unit (102) sends a first type of data transmission including an identification of access channels used for requesting access to the communications system (100). The base communications unit (102) assigns channels within the second set of channels response to receiving a request for access to the communications system (100) on the first set of channels. A mechanism also is provided for handling collisions in transmissions between the downstream communications units (134) to the base communications unit (102) in attempting to gain access to the communications system (100).

Abstract: The decoder has a probability circuit (432) which generates branch metrics using bit-wise probabilities representing frame to frame correlation relationships. The branch metrics pass to a trellis decoder (434) which outputs decoded data bits as a function of the bit-wise probabilities for at least predetermined bit positions. The decoder uses squared Euclidean distance circuitry in the branch metric generator. Communication can be in computers, radio, radio/cellular/cordless or landline telephone while the transmission medium can be twisted wire, coaxial cable or optical fibre.

Abstract: The process of the present invention generates an optimum automatic frequence control signal in an apparatus that has a plurality of adaptive algorithms, each adaptive algorithm having a reference signal with an associated frequency dither. The process starts by comparing the performance of each of the plurality of adaptive algorithms. This difference is input to a comparator (6) where it is compared to zero. This delta signal then modifies the numerically controlled oscillator frequency (8). After several iterations, the frequency offset is reduced to substantially zero.
